The mattress stitch is a method of joining knit pieces together to form one solid piece. The seam isn't visible because it is on the wrong side of the work.It is easy to learn how to use the mattress stitch to join knit pieces.
Step 1: You can thread a yarn or tapestry needle.
To join knit pieces with the mattress stitch, you will need a special needle.A tapestry needle works best. The yarn should be Threaded through the needle.
Step 2: Take your pieces and put them right side up.
You will need to sew with the right side facing you.The seam will be on the wrong side if this is not done.
Step 3: The needle can be inserted through the bar.
You should go through the bar between the last two stitches on the edge of your work. The seam may be too heavy. The needle should be inserted through the bar on the first side, going from the bottom of the work to the top.Don't work the needle through more than one bar at a time.puckering may occur if you go through two bars at the same time.
Step 4: The needle should be placed on the opposite side.
You should repeat the same thing on the other side after you make the first stitch. The needle should be inserted between the last two stitches.Place the needle below the bar and move it towards the top of the work.
Step 5: Go up and down.
Continue to work between your two pieces of knit work.Continue until you reach the top of the work.If you are working with a bulky yarn, you may be able to go through the bar on every other stitch. This is based on your preferences.
Step 6: Pull on the yarn after a few rows.
To tighten the seam between the two pieces, tug on the yarn after a few rows.Don't pull too tight or the yarn may pucker.Pull the yarn to bring the sides together. If you notice puckering, loosen the seam stitching.
Step 7: To secure the yarn, tie it through the last stitch.
Tie a knot to secure the last two sides of your work when you are happy with the appearance of the seam. You can either cut the excess yarn or use your tapestry or yarn needle to weave the end into the edge of your work.
Step 8: Join stockinette stitch work.
The stockinette knit stitch can be joined with the mattress stitch. The work uses a basic knit stitch on one side and a purl Stitch on the other side. With this type of knit, you can easily insert the needle through the bar between the last two stitches in the work and get a clean, hidden seam as your final result. You may not get the same results with other types of knits.
Step 9: A long tail is needed for weaving.
If you want to begin sewing two pieces together, leave a long tail on one of them instead of tying a piece of yarn to the corner. This will make sure you have enough yarn to work with.Pull out the last loop from your knit work after you cast off and then cut it when it's several inches long. The area you will be seaming with the mattress stitch should be twice as long as the tail.
Step 10: You can use the same yarn for your knit pieces.
Even though the yarn will be hidden on the wrong side of your work, it is a good idea to use the same color yarn as your other knit pieces. You will get a seamless finish after stitching the sides together.
