There are fun birds to keep as pets.Budgies are easy to tame, but it takes a lot of time, patience, and consistency. It can be rewarding for you and him to have fun while you tame your budgie.
Step 1: Allow your budgie to get used to its surroundings.
Budgies can be nervous. They will not be effective if they are nervous.Give your budgie about 2 weeks to get used to their new environment. They will be looking for his food and water dishes during this time.If possible, place the budgie in a busy room.Having them in a busy room will allow them to get used to seeing people as friends rather than enemies.budgies have sensitive hearing, so be careful that the room is not a stress place.Although there is a lot to see, be aware that it isn't a noisy room with the stereo on high or a room where there are drafts because of people coming and going. It needs to be pleasant so as not to overwhelm the bird.
Step 2: During normal activities, keep your budgie's cage close to you.
In order for your budgie to trust you, he needs to be close to you.Allow about a week for him to get used to it.When you are relaxing, have the cage next to you. When you have your budgie's cage close to you, you don't have to interact with him directly. The budgie needs to be comfortable in your presence.
Step 3: Don't touch your budgie.
You can start interacting with the budgie more often once they are comfortable with you.You need to be very patient with them so that they don't get anxious.Don't make eye contact with your budgie.Budgie has his eyes on the sides of his head.Because human eyes are positioned on the front of the head, looking directly at a budgie signals to him that you are a predator.
Step 4: You can talk to your budgie in soothing tones by placing your hand on the outside of the cage.
They will be able to see your hand as non threatening if they listen to your soothing voice. The budgie needs about a week to get used to being outside of the cage.
Step 5: Put your hand in the budgie's cage.
If you open the cage door slowly, you won't startle your budgie.Don't touch them or anything else in the cage. The budgie needs to be comfortable with his hand being in his physical space. It may take about a week for him to get used to it.If you are worried that your budgie will bite you, place a towel over your hand.
Step 6: Place your hand in his cage.
If they walk to you to grab the treat, slowly move your hand closer to your budgie. If the budgie gets scared, freezes, or flies to another part of the cage, don't be discouraged.Do this over at least a few sessions.During each session, move your hand closer to your budgie. They will be more comfortable taking the treat from your hand when you walk over to them.If you have a treat in your hand when you reach into the cage to change your budgie's food and water, they will get more comfortable with you.It may take several weeks to complete this step.
Step 7: Your budgie has a cage.
When building his trust, use the same slow and steady movements and soothing voice that you used.Even though your budgie should be more comfortable with you and your hand, you will need to be non-threatening to them to make progress in taming them.If you stick out your index finger, your budgie will be able to step on it.If you think your budgie will bite you, drape a towel over your hand.
Step 8: The index finger should be moved closer to the budgie.
Make sure you do it slowly. It is possible that your budgie will react the same way as you did when you gave him a treat.Wait for the budgie to calm down, then try again. You will gain his trust soon enough if he doesn't warm to you immediately. If your budgie seems jittery or flustered, you may want to wait until later in the day or try again on another day.
Step 9: Encourage your budgie to step on your finger.
Once the budgie is comfortable with having your index finger close to him, slowly place your finger on his chest just above his feet and push up.Light pressure is needed when you place your finger on their chest. When you place your index finger on your budgie's chest, they may get nervous and fly away from you.Your budgie may fly away when he doesn't understand the movement.Try again until he understands what you want them to do.As you push on your budgie's chest, say "step up" to help them understand.millet can be used to get your budgie to step onto your finger.
Step 10: Hold your hand up.
As soon as your budgie steps onto your finger, keep your hand still. It may take some time for your budgie to get used to using your hand as a perch.Use your finger as a perch and reward him with a treat.Have your budgie perch on your finger several times a day to be rewarded.
Step 11: Take your dog out of the cage.
Now that your budgie is used to stepping on your hand, it is time to take them out of their cage.Slow movements and a soothing voice can be used to get them out of their cage. The budgie's comfort zone is their cage.Don't rush them, you can try them out with treats. You can easily back your hand out of the cage if you have a clear exit path.If you get your budgie out of the cage, it's okay if he flies away.Do not chase your budgie if he flies away.It will feel like a predator situation to them if you chase your budgie.Wait for them to sit and then walk over to them.To get it to step up, reach out your finger. If your budgie flies back into their cage, let them relax and try again.Taking your budgie out of their cage and keeping them on your finger will probably take at least 1 week of daily practice.Be patient while they are outside of their cage.
Step 12: When they are on your finger, walk with them to different rooms.
When your budgie is comfortable being on your finger outside of their cage, take them to rooms that are unfamiliar to them.Budgie owners will take their bird to the bathroom. It would be helpful to cover the mirrors and the windows in the room you take your budgie to.Make sure the room is free of dangers such as fans and pets.A budgie may fly off your finger in a new environment.Do not chase them if they do this. The budgie may be more comfortable in the different room if you give them a treat.Take your budgie to a different room for 15-20 minutes at a time, a few times a day.
Step 13: Put your budgie on one of your fingers.
It will be easier to remove your budgie from their cage if you have both of your hands. They can stay in the same room as their cage, or you can choose a neutral room that he has become used to, such as the bathroom.
Step 14: You can sit in a chair, on the floor or on a bed.
It will be easier to teach your budgie to step up when you are sitting down.Sit down slowly and gently so as not to startle your budgie or cause them to fly off your finger.
Step 15: Put the index finger of your other hand on your budgie's chest.
When you first taught your budgie how to step onto your index finger, use gentle pressure against their chest.Push up against their chest as you say step up.Make this a daily activity. It will become a habit for your budgie.Your budgie may not be familiar with this verbal cue, so it may take a few tries before they understand that they should step up onto your other index finger. Each time he steps up, give him a small treat.
Step 16: You have to push on their chest to get them to step up onto your other index finger.
You should practice this several times a day in short sessions.budgies will learn how to step up on your fingers, so it won't take long.
