Martin is an American actor and singer.He played the role of Tom Collins in Rent on Broadway and also played Ed Green on Law & Order.

Martin was born in Virginia.His father was a truck driver and his mother a college counselor.He was two months premature.He was a child when his parents divorced.Martin adopted his stepfather's surname after his mother remarried.[3]

When the family relocated to Buffalo, New York, Martin began to dislike speaking because of his Southern accent and was often overcome with shyness.He was cast as the pastor in The Golden Goose after he joined an after-school drama program.As an inspired Southern Baptist preacher, the young Martin played the character the only way he knew how.Martin emerged from his shell after the hit.Martin was voted "most Talented" in his senior class at the Buffalo Academy forVisual and Performing Arts.Rubin Dorm, the former domain of Mark Twain, was the popular president of NYU's Tisch School of the Arts' theatre program.

Martin toured the states with John Houseman's acting company.He performed in local theatre, soap operas, and commercials after appearing in Shakespeare's Rock-in-Roles at the Actors Theatre of Louisville.Martin didn't have a way to support himself without auditioning, regional theater, and bit parts.When his appearance on CBS's Guiding Light aired in the same eatery, he was serving pizzas.The whole waitstaff gathered around the television to watch his performance.He would break out in song during the dinner rush.He told his customers to keep their dinner checks because one day they'll be famous.There is a citation needed.

Timon of Athens was where Martin made his Broadway debut.He met the playwright while working at the Moondance diner.Rent took the theatre world by storm in 1996, with Martin in the role of gay computer nerd Tom Collins.The 1990s update of La Bohme earned six Drama Desk Awards, five Obie Awards and four Tony Awards.Rent opened in the West End in 1998 with four of the original cast members, including Martin.He played Tad in the album.

In 2010, Martin returned to the stage for one of his biggest theater commitments since Law & Order, performing in the productions of The Merchant of Venice and The Winter's Tale at the Delacorte Theater in Central Park.He played the roles of King and Gratiano.The shows were performed in repertory from June 9, 2010 to August 1, 2010.

Martin reprised his role as Gratiano in a limited engagement of The Merchant of Venice on Broadway.The show opened on November 7.Martin did not reprise his role after the hiatus due to other work commitments.The opening of the Delacorte Theater in Central Park was 50 years ago on June 18, 2012 and he took part in a one-night-only reading benefit to celebrate.[5]

413 Hope St. was a short-lived film by Fox and Eric Bross's film Restaurant was an independent film.David E. Kelley remembered Martin when Rent needed a new boyfriend for the title character.Martin's performance as Dr. Greg Butters on Ally McBeal caught the attention of David Duchovny, who cast Martin as a baseball-playing alien in a 1999 episode of The X-Files titled "The Unnatural."

While still shooting Ally McBeal, Martin heard rumors that Benjamin Bratt was leaving Law & Order.Martin had tried out for the show years before and won the minor role of Earl the Hamster, but decided to wait for a bigger part.Martin approached Dick Wolf about the opening.After hearing that CBS and Fox were interested in Martin, Wolf gave the actor the part without an auditioning.[6]

He played Ed Green on Law & Order from 1999 to 2008.He was the fifth-longest serving cast member.He had a brief hiatus at the end of the 2004–2005 season while he was filming the movie adaptation of Rent in which he reprised the role of Tom Collins.Anthony Anderson replaced Martin in the final episode of Law & Order.The co-star of The Philanthropist was Martin.

NBC announced on September 14, 2012 that Martin would be playing the artistic director of the Manhattan Theatre Workshop in the second season of Smash.Martin was in an NBC pilot called The Secret Lives of Husbands and Wives, but it was not picked up to series.[9]

Joe West is played by Martin in the superhero series The Flash, a spin-off from Arrow.In the third season episode " Duet", Martin played a criminal in Barry and Kara's dreamworld.Martin took medical leave after the fourth episode of the fifth season due to a back injury.He was leaning against a wall or sitting down from the start of the season.The fifteenth episode of the season was Martin's return from medical leave.[2]

On March 4, it was announced that Martin would take over the role of Marvin Gaye in the film Sexual Healing.It was Martin's dream role to portray the legendary Marvin Gaye, and he had been attached to the film for years.With only three weeks to go on a planned nine-and-a-half week shoot, it was reported that production had stopped due to financial problems.70% of the film was shot.[16]
