Where is the Ignition Control module located?

A solid state "On/Off" switch is used for the electronic ignition control module.A sensor inside the distributor sends a signal to the module.The spark plugs are created by using the signal to fire the coil.The ignition module can be mounted to the side of the engine compartment or inside the distributor.The engine won't run when a module goes bad.The easiest way to check your ignition module is with the simplest of tools.

Attach an old spark plug to the end of the plug boot by removing one plug wire.There is a spark plug on the engine.Check for a spark at the old spark plug when you crank the engine.There was no spark on the plug.

When the key is on, make sure to check the coil positive terminal.The multimeter should be placed on the positive coil terminal.The battery negative terminal has a black lead on it.The switch should be turned into the "Run" position.The positive terminal should be read by the multimeter.The problem with the ignition switch is if the voltage is not present.

The ignition module has a positive wire.Without starting the engine, turn the key "Run" position.The multimeter has a red lead.There should be a reading at the wire.Check for an open circuit between the wire and the switch if the battery voltage is not present.

The ignition module has a negative wire.The multimeter has a red lead.Without removing the spark plug wires, you can't remove the distributor cap.By cranking the engine, you can turn the distributor center shaft.As the engine is cranking over, look at the distributor rotor.The distributor or distributor gears are bad if the distributor fails to turn.The multimeter should tell you the difference between battery voltage and zero.

If the multimeter reading doesn't fluctuate between battery voltage and zero as the distributor is turning, replace the ignition module.Attach the distributor cap securely.The multimeter is in the ignition module.
