If this is for general purpose power in a car or boat, I would suggest wiring the 12 volt cigarette socket to the battery with a 20 amp fuse in the circuit. If you use a 10 amp fuse, it may not be a high enough rating for accessories such as air compressors and power inverters.
What size fuse do I need for 12V LED lights?
75mm is good for about 7.5 amps max. I generally like to have at least 100% extra rating so a 3 amp fuse max is what i would use. This should be plenty for 4 leds. If you have working leds but blow a 10A fuse i think your wiring needs checking and you will probably find your fuse is directly across the battery.Oct 5, 2012
How do I know what size fuse to use?
Find the size of fuse by multiplying the amps required by the device (2) by 1.5. 2×1.25 = 2.5 then we will round up to the nearest fuse size (in multiples of 5 amps) which would call for a 5 amp fuse.Dec 14, 2021
Will a 250V fuse work for 12V?
I have used 250V fuses on 12V circuits without relevant voltage drop (less than 0.5V). But the quality of the fuses may differ. I can confirm that they were working as some of these fuses blew instantly when short circuited.Jan 6, 2018

Should 12v fuse be on positive or negative?
Recommended practice is to place the fuse near the positive terminal of the battery, so the whole circuit will be dead if the fuse blows.

How is a fuse wired?
A fuse is a piece of wire of a material with a very low melting point, that is, it melts and breaks as soon as its temperature gets higher than its melting point. The material used for making fuse have low melting points , hence fuse wires are mainly made up of tin, lead or zinc.Jul 21, 2021
How does a 12 volt circuit breaker work?
Most circuit breakers found in 12V or 24V systems operate thermally. The heat generated by the excess current during an overload causes the contacts inside the breaker to come apart and break the circuit. These are then reset either manually or automatically depending on the design of the circuit breaker.
How does a power fuse work?
The fuse breaks the circuit if a fault in an appliance causes too much current to flow. This protects the wiring and the appliance if something goes wrong. The fuse contains a piece of wire that melts easily. If the current going through the fuse is too great, the wire heats up until it melts and breaks the circuit.
Where does the fuse go in a 12v circuit?
Recommended practice is to place the fuse near the positive terminal of the battery, so the whole circuit will be dead if the fuse blows. (Of course, if the positive terminal is considered Ground, place the fuse near the negative terminal.)
Where should a fuse be placed in a circuit?
The best place to install a fuse in a grounded power system is on the ungrounded conductor path to the load. That way, when the fuse blows there will only be the grounded (safe) conductor still connected to the load, making it safer for people to be around.
Does a fuse go before or after a switch?
Actually the fuse should be placed after the switch by code. The reason is that the fuse needs to be replaced when it blows. The switch should not normally need to be replaced. Also by having the fuse after the switch the current is still limited by the fuse so that the current rating of the switch isn't exceeded.
