A moderately successful but incredibly egotistical psychiatrist with a wife and two children, and a sister who he deeply cares for, is named Leo.He is going to be on Good Morning America to promote his new book, Baby Steps, but before he can go to his vacation home in New Hampshire, he has to treat another person.He was about to leave for a vacation, but his secretary told him his last patient was arriving.After meeting Bob, Leo gives him a copy of his book and then sends him on his way.Bob didn't know that his colleague would cover for him if he needed it, but he was told that he would return until Labor Day.He heads to the lake with his family.Bob has become a fan of Leo.Bob came up with a plan to find out where Leo lives and go to meet him, much to the annoyance of the latter.

Bob was told to wait at a coffee shop where they could talk over the phone after meeting again.The Guttmans, the owners of the shop, decided to drive Bob to Leo's house due to the fact that they had spent years saving up money to buy their dream house.Bob was given a prescription by Leo to take a vacation from his problems.Bob seems to have made a breakthrough, but the next morning he shows up and says he decided to take a vacation both in spirit and in fact, and that he is a guest of the Guttmans.Bob is welcomed into the home of Leo's family, but he thinks that being friends with a patient is not important to him.Bob arouses Leo's jealousy by proving to be able to help Sigmund and Anna with their problems better than he can, such as helping Anna deal with her social problems and helping Sigmund get over his fear of diving.Bob brushes it off as an accident as a jealous Leo pushes him into the lake.At dinner, Bob continues to praise Leo, but a comment about Baby Steps causes him to choke on some food, and Bob performs a painful and preposterous variant of the Heimlich manuever to save his life.A storm forces Bob to spend the night with the kids and Fay.The family ignores the fact that Bob is crazy.

The next day, Bob is asked to comment on Baby Steps by the interviewer, who tried to get him to leave before the TV crew arrived.Bob gives a glowing report on it and ends up stealing the show from Leo.After the TV crew leaves, Leo throws a temper tantrum and tries to have Bob committed to a mental asylum, but is forced to retrieve him after Bob easily proves his sanity by befriending the staff and telling therapy jokes.Halfway back, Bob gets a ride back to the house, despite being cited for speeding by a motorcycle cop, getting a flat tire, and being abandoned in the middle of the road.After making it back that night, he was surprised by a birthday party his family and friends had been planning for him.The party was ruined when Bob appeared and Leo became psychotic and attacked him.Even after this, Bob still doesn't know that he cannot stand him.

After realizing that they don't know why, Fay and the kids reluctantly asked Bob to leave.Leo broke into a sporting goods store and stole a shotgun and twenty pounds of explosives.He called his actions "death therapy - a guaranteed cure" when he kidnapped Bob because he was afraid of the dark.Bob, failing to understand sarcasm, unties himself using what he learned from Baby Steps and, thinking that the explosives are a prop for a metaphor, returns to the house and places them inside before rejoining the Marvins outside.A horrified Leo demands to know where the explosives are, as Bob informs him that the house has been destroyed by explosives.He is rendered catatonic by the sight.
