Nylon and Polyester Fabric Fire Resistance Synthetic fibers comprise most of the top choices for fire-resistant fabrics. While most natural fibers are flammable, plastic-based fibers will often melt due to the heat instead of igniting.2 Mar 2021
Is there fireproof fabric?
Before we get started, it's important to note that no fabric is actually fireproof; given enough time, they will burn. However, fabrics like wool and Kevlar resist flames inherently because of the structure of the fiber. A tightly woven wool fabric will take longer to burn than cotton or linen.22 Sept 2014
Although all fabrics will burn, some are naturally more resistant to fire than others. Those that are more flammable can have their fire resistance drastically improved by treatment with fire-retardant chemicals.
Can you treat fabric to be fire retardant?
Making fabrics, including clothing, natural and artificial fibres less likely to catch and stay on fire, involves treating fabrics with a flame retardant solution. Fire retardants work by making the material more resistant to catching fire, but cannot make flammable materials fire-proof.
