The ancient Romans were accustomed to saying "I shall/will love you!" ("te amabo"/"amabo te") in supplication, and "I love you!" ("te amo") when they were expressing gratitude. Latin "amare" has a broader semantic range than English "to love", and so can be a semantically "weaker" or, perhaps, less intense a verb.
