What is forming, Storming, Norming and performing?
In a perfect world, new team members would work well together. They would communicate well and focus on the team's mission.
We live in the real world. It takes time for teams to reach their full potential.
The first stages of team formation were identified by Bruce Tuckman. They are forming, Storming, Norming and Performing. The process teams go through is described by them.
Some team members might feel anxious in the forming stage, but most are positive and polite.People try to get to know each other during this time.
Storming is the next stage.People are pushing against boundaries.People become frustrated with one another's differences in approach when there is conflict around personality and different working styles. Some people might question the goals of the team. Some teams don't make it past the Storming stage.
Norming is the third stage.People begin to resolve their differences, build on one another's strengths, and respect you as a leader during this time.
The final stage is performing.Your team members reach this stage when they are able to achieve the group's goal.As a leader, you can delegate more work and spend more time developing each person to be the best they can be.
There's a lot you can do as a leader to speed the process up, and help your people get to the Performing stage faster.
