The patient's eating and swallowing patterns will not be affected by a tracheostomy.Sometimes swallowing dynamics need to be adjusted, but it's rare that this can be done in a short time.If swallowing problems do occur, it is usually due to limited elevation of the larynx, or the inability to close the vocal cords, which allow food or fluids into the trachea. An evaluation can include a videofluoroscopic swallowing study or other procedures to make sure the patient is swallowing safely. If there is a problem with swallowing, the speech pathologist may be able to help.
If the patient eats by mouth, it's a good idea to put the tube down.It is possible that excessive coughing and vomiting can be prevented by this.
A patient with a tracheostomy can benefit from encouraging fluid intake.Increased fluid intake will loosen phlegm and make it easier to cough.
