There are many ways to change the style of a wig.It could be trimmed to a shorter length, added layers, or created bangs. You should always use good quality hair scissors and take your time. It's possible to cut and style your own wig at home.
Step 1: Place your wig on a wig stand.
To secure the wig to the stand, place a few T-pins along the lace line and near each ear.Put the pins near the hair if you have a full-lace wig.Place the pins within the lace line if you have a lace-front wig.The wig stand is straight.Your wig could end up with an asymmetrical haircut if it is at an angle.
Step 2: If you want to remove tangles, comb or brush the hair.
Take a few minutes to brush out your wig.You want to make sure that there are no tangles or sections of hair that are not falling where they should be.You need to be patient when cutting your wig since it doesn't grow back.If you don't know what length you want your wig to be, this is a good time to think about it.
Step 3: The back of the wig is where you should start working.
If you want to wig to be, you need to move your fingers down the hair.Try to keep the hair between your middle and index fingers. If you want to make a drastic change and go from long hair to medium-length or short hair, just adjust where you are going to cut it.
Step 4: Take care not to cut your fingers by cutting hair at a 45 degree angle.
Use your hair-cutting scissors to cut the hair on your fingers.Make small things to prevent accidents. The angle helps the hair look more natural than a straight, blunt cut would.
Step 5: The wig should be trimmed until all of the ends are the same length.
When moving on to a new section, use some of the hair from an already-cut area to guide the trimming so everything is the same length. If you want to shorten your wig in the future, you can, but you cannot make it longer.
Step 6: Remove any hairs that you missed in the trimming process.
If you missed long, scraggly hairs in the trimming process, walk around the wig and check the ends. They should be used to clean up your wig.To make sure the hair on the wig is even, check the length of the hairs on either side.
Step 7: Put your wig on a wig stand and pin it in place.
To secure the wig to the stand, put several T-pins in the lace line and in front of the ears. The wig stand is straight.Basic sewing pins can be used if you don't have T-pins.
Step 8: To hold back the front sections of hair, clip them in front of the ears.
Take the front sections of the wig and put them in your hands. You should clip the hair in front of the ears to make sure it doesn't get cut.It is easier to start with the back since it is the area that needs the most work.
Step 9: Where do you want your layers to fall?
The wig hair should be separated from the top layers. The wig's length should be left in the bottom layer.Do you want the layers to be long or short? If you layer the middle section to fall 1 to 2 inches above the bottom layer, the top section could fall as well.If you separated the middle and top sections into smaller portions, you could create multiple layers. It depends on how you want your hair to be.
Step 10: You can work on the middle section first if you pin the top section of hair.
The bottom and middle sections of hair should be left hanging down if you use another hair clip. The top section of hair should be clipped away from the rest of the wig.If you have a hard time doing it by hand, use a comb.
Step 11: Between your middle and index fingers, hold a small section of your hair.
At a time, cut sections that are 2 to 3 inches across. To cut the first layer, position your middle and index fingers at a 45 degree angle.Don't cut your fingers during this process.
Step 12: The top layer of hair needs to be taken down.
Again, hold small sections of the hair between your middle and index fingers, and cut it off at a 45 degree angle. If you feel that the sections are getting tangled together, you should brush or comb out the hair.
Step 13: Stand in front of the wig and let the pinned sections go.
Remove the hair clips from the wig.Think about how you want your face to look. The front of the hair is shorter than the back.
Step 14: The hair that frames the face should be cut first.
Cut the sides of the front at a downward angle with your scissors.Keeping your elbow up helps guide your hand in the right direction. The shortest sections of hair are still long enough to be styled, so a lot of people start the framing around ear length.
Step 15: The top and middle sections of the wig should be placed together.
You can cut the middle and top of the wig at a different angle than you would if you cut straight across. As you work on the middle, section off the top portion. If you want the hair to lay nicely with the outline you created, you need to cut the front layers at a downward angle.
Step 16: Try the wig on and place a pin in the hair you want.
If your wig stand is a different shape than your head, it is wise to try the wig on first and determine where you want the bangs to land. You can try on several different looks to see what you like best if you upload your picture to a website that does virtual hair.
Step 17: Place your wig on a wig stand.
T-pins or sewing pins can be used to secure your wig in the lace line. There is a pin through the crown of the wig.The wig stand should be straight and not leaning on one side.
Step 18: The section of hair you want to brush forward should be in the same position.
A thicker or thinner section of hair is what you want to cut.Try to use more hair for full-front bangs. You can get away with a thinner section if you have side-swept bangs. Before you cut the hair, use a comb or brush.
Step 19: Take a small section of hair and cut it.
The wig hair should be between your middle and index fingers.Take your scissors and cut up your hair at a 45 degree angle.Don't cut your fingers accidentally. If you are worried about the bangs being too short, cut below the pin.If you want to go any shorter, you can put the wig on and check the length.
Step 20: The rest of your cuts should be guided by a piece of an already-cut section.
Bring along a section that has already been trimmed when you cut the next section of your hair. You are more likely to keep your bangs if you do that.It is much harder to fix a wig than it is to grow out natural hair, so take your time when creating bangs in your wig.
Step 21: You can see if they are even across if you comb the down bangs.
After cutting your hair, use a comb to put it in place. If you need to adjust the length further, you could try on the wig at this point. If you missed long hairs that still need to be trimmed, combing the bangs can help.
Step 22: You need to trim any long hairs that you missed.
Use your scissors to trim hair that you missed in your initial cuts. You are good to go if you double-check the wig length. There are bangs that can be fun. They can add a lot of style to your look if you braid them back.
