There is a reference chart for the color ofPrestone 50/50 Antifreeze.
Have you ever wondered about the differences between pink, orange, blue and green engine coolants?Maybe you bought a new car, checked the coolant/antifreeze reservoir for the first time, and noticed it was different from the last one.Should you use which if you need to top up?
The colour of the engine coolant doesn't make it look pretty. It comes in different colors because of historical reasons, but these days it doesn't tell you much.
It is important to make sure you put the right fluid in your car, so here we give a bit of insight into the differences. You can make a better-informed decision on the product that is right for you if you look at some of the advantages of using high-performance coolant/antifreeze.
If you need help identifying which fluid is which, take a look at our car fluid finder chart. Some products are one colour and others are another, as our expert Bruce Ellis explains below:
You could tell a lot about the type of coolant used by its color in the past.
Inorganic Additive Technology (IAT) used in older coolants were usually blue or green. You would have to change them every two years or every 60,000 miles.
The Organic Acid Technology (OAT) coolants offered better protection for cooling systems and extended the life of the coolant. The 'Extended Life Coolants' were usually orange in colour and offered a five-year or 100,000-mile change interval. They could be a blend of IAT and OAT chemicals.
A 10-year or 300,000-mile change interval is now offered by newer coolants that are based solely on the OAT chemical make-up.Many other coolant manufacturers use different colors.
If you want to know what chemicals are in the coolant, you have to see whether it is blue, green, yellow or orange.
It is so confusing because you can open up the bonnet of a new car and not know what the coolant is based on.If you buy a second-hand car, the colour of the coolant doesn't give you a clue as to when it needs to be changed.
Suppose you buy a second-hand car and it has pink coolant. The service record shows that it has had a service in the last two years. Is it aftermarket or original? Will it last for a while?
When you don't know what kind of Coolant/Antifreeze is in your car, the best thing to do is to top it up.
No matter what car it is or what coolant is in it, Prestone Coolant/Antifreeze is developed to work with any other coolant, and you can mix it with others safely without worrying about hampered performance. If you use the product at the change interval, you get complete peace of mind, as the coolant will offer protection for 10 years or 300,000 miles, which is likely to be the life of the car.
It is easy to overlook. You check your oil every now and then, but a lot of drivers don't.
It is guaranteed to provide protection for the cooling system for 10 years if you use a product like Prestone. It is worth draining the system and replacing it with a high- performance alternative if you don't know which anti-freeze is in your car.
Here, we look at some of the advantages of using a product like Prestone.
I'm not sure if Prestone Coolant/Antifreeze is as good as we say it is.Maybe you are a little nervous about adding the product to your tank.Jonathan Fry, a professional mechanic, demonstrates how the product works and explains why it is safe to use with different colors of coolant.
