Swimming pools in the backyard usually have 1 or more underwater lights. The bulb will need to be replaced just like any other light. You don't have to lower the water level in your pool to replace the bulb. You can pull the fixture up onto the side of the pool and change the light bulb there if you remove the housing.
Step 1: All power should be turned off for the pool lighting.
You can do this at the circuit breaker box.One of the breakers should be marked to turn off the electricity to the pool.Swimming pools can have their own breaker boxes. If you don't see a pool breaker in your main electrical box, look around near your pool to see if there is a second box nearby.
Step 2: If power is off, try to turn on the pool lights.
The pool lights should be turned on and off to make sure the pool isn't getting any electrical power.Try to switch the pool pump on and off if you only have one pool light. The pump won't turn on if the power is off.
Step 3: There is a single screw at the top.
The only thing holding the light fixture to the pool wall is a screw. Most of the time, this will be a largePhillips-head screw, so you will need aPhillips screwdriver to remove it.Roll up your sleeves, put your arm under the water, and remove the screwlock. If your arm is too short to reach the light on the side of your pool, you will have to get into the pool to remove the fixture.Once you have removed the screwlock, place it somewhere that it won't roll away and get lost. It's a good idea to have a shirt pocket.
Step 4: The niche box has a light fixture.
The tab at the bottom allows you to pull the fixture away from the wall.Use the flat-head screwdriver to loosen this tab.In a few other locations, use the screwdriver to loosen the fixture.Pull the light fixture out of the wall once it is loose.
Step 5: The lighting fixture needs to be pulled up onto the pool deck.
If you want to move the fixture to the deck, there should be plenty of cord coiled up in the niche box.Slowly draw the fixture and the cord behind it up onto the pool deck and set it on the concrete surface. If the cord is not unraveling, reach into the wall behind the light fixture and give it sharp tugs.
Step 6: The cover and lens should not be in the light fixture.
The method depends on the age of the pool. There are screws that need to be removed in older pool models. Most pool lights have tabs that need to be pried loose.Set the lens aside in a safe place. The rubber gasket is between the lens and the metal fixture. When you remove the lens and gasket, make sure there is no water in the fixture.
Step 7: A replacement bulb is identical to the one in the light.
The exact type of bulb the fixture requires can be found in your pool's handbook or user manual. You can purchase a bulb at a local pool-supply store. The size, brand, and serial numbers of the 2 bulbs should match.Purchase the bulb online if you can't find it in the store.Major online retailers and the pool manufacturer's website can be used to purchase replacement pool bulbs. If you are worried that the light fixture may be leaking, you can purchase a new rubber gasket to seal the fixture and prevent water from getting in.
Step 8: Attach the new bulb to the old one with a towel.
You will be able to reach in and grab the bulb once the lens and gasket are out of the way.To remove the bulb, twist it counterclockwise.Hold onto the new bulb with a towel after removing it.Place the bulb in the center of the fixture.Don't touch the lightbulb. The oils on your fingers can cause a bulb to burn out.The old bulb can be thrown in a trash can.
Step 9: If the light works, turn the power on for a short time.
If the light turns on, go back to the circuit breaker or pool electrical box.If it does, turn the switch back on so you don't have to worry about installing a new bulb. The bulb may burn itself out if you leave it on for longer than 5 seconds. The bulbs used in pool lights are very hot.If you don't have cool water surrounding it, the light will quickly burn out.
Step 10: Reunite the fixture with the lens replaced.
The gasket and lens should be put back in place. As you put the parts of the light fixture back together, use the edge of your towel to dry any water that has dripped into the fixture.
Step 11: The light fixture needs to be closed with screws and tabs.
The pool light fixture can be re- reassembled. If you removed small screws from the fixture while you were taking it apart, now is the time to put them back in.The gasket needs to be pressed between the lens and fixture cover. If you are dealing with a newer model pool light fixture that does not have screws, make sure the tabs are firmly pushed into position so that the fixture is sealed shut.
Step 12: Place the fixture back into the light niche.
You can reach below the surface of the water by holding the fixture in your hand. You withdrew the fixture from the niche.Put the screw-lock screw back into the hole at the top of the fixture.Use yourPhillips head screwdriver to tighten the screw. If you had to pull the cable out, you will need to feed it back into the wall.Wrap the cord around the base of the fixture 3-4 times before you put it in the wall.
Step 13: The power can be turned back on by changing the circuit breaker.
Electricity will be restored to the pool light.Make sure the light is on when the circuits are connected again. You may be dealing with a more serious electrical problem if the light isn't working correctly. If you want the manufacturer to send a repair specialist to inspect the pool, contact them.
