The Valspar ZERO VOC paint line is non-toxic.
Most paints don't list their ingredients, others list the main components, and some only list what has to be legally disclosed on a safety data sheet.
There are products that will flash off and cure quickly, while other products can take longer to cure.
The hormone system can be disrupted by alkylphenol ethoxylates, which are used in acrylic paints.
Preservatives are found in all paints except Milk Paint. Some brands in the post reveal which ones they use.We can only guess based on the list of commonly used Preservatives.
If you are sensitive to chemicals, you should look through the ingredients and review what works best for you.
When it comes to eco-friendly paint, I think it's best to use a paint that is 0-VOC for two weeks but also has a low odor when wet.

The most common type of paint used in homes. There is a main binder. This is widely used because of the ease of application.
Paints with a more natural base are included in this category. The category is very diverse.Mineral paints include silicates, clay-based paints, lime paint or lime wash, chalk paint, and milk paint.
What islatex paint? This is a general term.Styrene-butadiene rubber was used in paint.Today's standard use paints do not contain this ingredient. Some paints are made with a 100% acrylic binder.
The most popular paint for the sensitive is the ECOS primer and paints.
In 99% of cases, this paint is my go-to pick for healthy and sensitive people.
The only synthetic paint that releases its ingredient list in full is this one.
It's rare to find someone who doesn't do well with ECOS, though the extremely sensitive need to air it out longer may want to test out a number of brands as well as the more natural mineral options to see which one works best.
They no longer use mildewcides in the formula, but they do use a preservative.
ECOS brand paint is used in Quiet Home Paints.Quiet Home has "curated colors" which makes them $12 more per gallon. This product is the same as ECOS paint and can match any color.
They have a website where you can buy it.It is $65 a gallon with free shipping in the US.They sell 3 samples for $10 each.
It is tintable to thousands of colors.No-VOC colorants are used in Safecoat. The primer is low-VOC.
Since zero VOC means it can still contain some hazardous substances, they make it a focus to have no hazardous air pollutants.
The paint is not usually my top pick, especially for the severely sensitive, because this brand makes fantastic products.Since it does a better job at seal in offgassing than other brands, you may want to use AFM Transitional Primer.
You can buy it online. It is $65 a gallon with shipping. You can buy samples for $6 each. They deliver to the US and Canada.
They went out of business in North America. The paint is still available in the UK.
The company was not responsive to attempts to contact them, but a person thinks American Pride may be similar.
ECOS is accepted as well as Mythic was. This is my pick for a new paint.I've heard that the same scientist was involved in both brands, but there's more to it than that.
It is not a statement about the formula that Much Smarter Paint claims to have matched. The company has no reason to say that they matched the formula.
You can buy online much smarter paints.A quart is $17.$50 a gallon + shipping is what it is.
I don't think they have ECOS beat, but you may still prefer them. You can purchase ECOS paint online.
They can be contacted for dealers in the US.This can be found at local green building or specialty paint stores.
The paint is different. The acrylic is not derived from petrochemicals.
One of the original non-toxic paint lines is Benjamin Moore's Natura.
They now have many more zero-VOC lines.According to the company reps, Eco Spec is the closest paint to Natura.
If you want to buy something from a store right now or on Amazon, this might be the best option.
There are Benjamin Moore stores in the US and Canada. You can buy samples online, but only in the US.
The paint claims to reduce formaldehyde.Based on the patents of this company, it is likely that this paint contains a number of ingredients.
ProClassic Waterborne Interior Acrylic Enamel has been reported to offgas relatively quickly by people who are moderately sensitive.
You can buy it at the paint stores. You have to get a sample of the real paint in-store if you want to buy online color samples.
Spartazero has zero-VOC pigments. The Everest has a HPD that shows all ingredients.
They are free of alkylphenol ethoxylates and a isothiazolinone.
You may want to test it if you like buying local and supporting smaller companies.
The most affordable of the zero-VOC paints is the Valspar Simplicity line.
If you need to convince a property owner or management company to use a healthier paint, this could be a good option.
It is available at Lowes in the US and Canada. It starts at $26/gallon in the US and only $18 in Canada.
Farrow & Ball is the most tolerable paint in this section, despite being slightly over the threshold for what is considered zero-VOC.
The rate of offgassing can vary greatly, and we are all different in which chemicals are the most triggering, which is why there can be exempt vocs in paint.
This seems to be the safest paint when wet.It cured quickly.
There is a binder in this paint. It contains isothiazolinones.
The company is based in the UK.Most countries around the world can be ordered with paint shipping from the US, UK, France and Germany.A sample pot costs $8.
Most big brands have zero or close to zero-VOC paint. The Delux brand is available all around the world and has a close to zero-VOC formula. There is a new online brand of no-VOC paint that sells peel and stick color swatch.Mineral oil is found in some of their paints.

Did this post help you?You can buy me a coffee to support the research.Thank you!
Thank you, Corinne!I am wondering if ECOs universal primer would be less toxic than Promar 200.I am painting doors. Thanks!
The universal or transitional primer has a higher odor than a regular basic wall primer.I haven't seen them at the same time.If I remember correctly, I think ECOS universal is a higher odor.
I wanted to thank you so much for this information, and I had a chance to look over your entire website. This helps me be unparalyzed in making necessary changes.Thank you!
This is a great post, but I think you missed something: Swedish natural oil paints such as Allback. These are great for interior trim and furniture. You can find the U.S. seller if you look upsolvent free paints.
This post was well-researched and I would like to thank you for that!I am afraid to ask, but are any of the healthier interior paints available at big box stores?
I am making our bathroom look better. My contractor is using Kilz and I was wondering if it was safe to use it in the bathroom.
I wouldn't use Kilz. There is no need for a biocide or special paint if the mold is removed and the problem is fixed.
Would you choose Benjamin Moore natura or SW harmony for a home with a small child and one family member with asthma?Which wall primer would you recommend? Our walls were never primed when they were built, so we need to prime before we paint.Thank you so much!!
Would you choose Benjamin Moore natura or SW harmony for a home with a small child and one family member with asthma?Which wall primer would you recommend? We need to primer our walls before painting because they are not primed when they were built.Thank you so much!!
There are no significant differences between those two.Ben Moore is liked more by people with sensitivities. They also make a primer.
I wish I had found your site before making this mistake. When I bought my house last year it had a strong dog smell, so I ripped out the Carpets and painted the subfloor in a couple rooms.Put in a new carpet. One room still has offgassing a year later.I had a test done that showed elevated levels of xylene and Ethyl benzene. What can you tell me to stop the offgassing? Can I just bite the bullet and sand the whole thing if I have to pull the carpet back up?Thank you for any information!
I don't think so.The carpet was close to reaching the wall in the closet. The carpet in the other room does not smell. The carpet was tacked down along the perimeter, not attached to the subfloor.
I would keep trying to figure out where it comes from by comparing the subfloor to the carpet and why it is coming mostly from the closet.
I didn't know this was going to be a long conversation. The gas isn't trapped in the closet because it has no door. The only place the subfloor is exposed is in the closet, where the smell is the worst. Is there a reason you think it's the carpet?
The source of the problem would be isolated first.I would ask my clients a number of questions to make sure they know what the offending material is.
There is a post on non-toxic concrete finishes.
A company called "Clare" was discovered after reading an article on top healthy paint brands. It has some type of green certification and full transparency on their cans.I don't know if it is safe for people with sensitive skin.Since ECOs does not sell tinted samples, I am concerned about color matching with another brand, even though I was planning on using ECOS.Have you had the chance to look at the paint?I want to hear what you have to say.
When I contacted the company, they did not respond and I could not see their full ingredient list.It is likely similar to other 0 VOC brands but they do not sell samples so I don't know how to judge it.
Thanks for your quick reply. When making a decision for our home, I want to hear from you first.
Were either of you able to get more info about the paint?I am not impressed with colors by ECOS but not sure about the ingredients.Even though color options seem better with Clare, mainstream non-VOC options still give me a reaction.
ECOS has some of the best colors for Ben Moore.Farrow and Ball are well known for their unique colors.
Thank you, Corinne.Excellent post.Do you know which chemicals are the most fragrant in paints?
The common products are the extenders, defoamers and the binder.
There are no reviews for Durasoy interior paint.I want to order it but I need to hear from someone that has tried it.Anyone?
I want to upgrade my bathroom cabinets.I was wondering if it would be less toxic to use a low VOC paint and repaint them or to buy a new painted cabinet where the varnish is baked on.Is it possible to stop the off gassing?
