It can be hard to get rid of a bug.Smashing each individual roach seems like an impossible task, and you may want a way to tackle the problem without getting your hands dirty. It costs less to remove bugs from a trap than it does to spray them, and it can be a great alternative to bug spray.
Step 1: Try to make a trap out of duct tape.
The strategy is simple, you need bait to attract the roaches, and glue to keep them there. The trap can be difficult to move once you have set it, but it is a simple trick and you can get a high reward for relatively little effort. If you prefer to buy traps, you can find them.Ask your local exterminators for advice, or look at home-and-garden stores.
Step 2: Get some duct tape.
The roaches may be able to easily escape if the tape is not fresh and sticky. You can use alternatives to duct tape, but make sure they are strong.Your trap needs to be able to hold the roaches until you can remove them from your home.
Step 3: Pick the bait.
Anything with a sweet or oily smell will work. You can use anything fragrant, but onion is a common choice.Try using a small strip of fruit.Use a small piece of bread. If the roaches in your house are particularly attracted to any food item, try using that as a bait.Gel baits spiked with active ingredients can be used to kill the roaches. These are not always attractive to roaches, and may not be as effective as advertised. You can contact a pest-control center or a home-and-garden store. It's important to only use a small portion of your bait. There will be little motivation for roaches to get stuck if the bait spills over the tape. You can slice the onion, fruit, or other food into a chunk.
Step 4: Establish the bait.
The fruit, onion, bread, and other items should be placed there. There is a length of sticky tape.Make sure that it is stable.
Step 5: Place your trap.
You should leave the tape in an area where you've found a lot of roaches: a kitchen, a dark corner, or a hole in the wall. You will need to find a way to remove them or dispose of them without setting them free after you decide what to do with them. You can put the trap in a high place, such as the top of your kitchen cabinets.Roaches like to move fast.
Step 6: Wait a while.
Most of the time, cockroaches do most of their work at night.Don't disturb the tape until the morning, and leave it where it is overnight. You should find a lot of roaches when you check the trap at the end of the night. You can either kill them or release them.Pick up the duct tape and take it outside.Shake off the roaches and throw away the tape if you bring it at least 100 feet from your home.Gloves or a bin can be used if you don't want to pick up the trap with your bare hands.Place a box over the tape and side a piece of paper to hold the roaches in place while you bring them outside. You can throw away the duct tape if you want to kill the roaches. The insects may crawl out of the bag or bin if you don't close it up.
Step 7: Try to get a roaches out of a jar.
The model is easy to move and is safe for children and pets.A mayonnaise or spaghetti sauce jar can be found in a quart-size mason jar.
Step 8: The roaches should be given a way to climb into the jar.
Wrap masking or duct tape around the jar's outer surface to make it easier for the roaches to climb up the sides.Place the jar near a small ramp or rim so that roaches can easily find their way inside.
Step 9: Make the jar slippery.
At least four inches down from the top is what you should coat the inside with. The roaches won't be able to get traction if they try to climb back out of the jar.The gel bait is prone to drying out, so consider mixing the petroleum jelly with it to kill the roaches. As long as you need to catch your roaches, you should increment the amount of petroleum jelly.
Step 10: The trap should be baited.
If you put something smelly in the jar, it will attract the roaches. Some people prefer the use of onion slices over a piece of banana peel. The roaches can climb out of the jar if the bait is large. You can drown the roaches by pouring a bit of beer or red wine into the jar.Fruit juices, sweet sodas, and sugar water work well. The beverages will attract the roaches.
Step 11: The trap needs to be set.
Make sure that there is room on the sides for the roaches to crawl into the jar, if you have a roach problem. The roaches will fall into the jar because they can't get out.You can leave the jar in an enclosed space like a closet or a garage. The smell of the bait will entice roaches into your trap.
Step 12: Take the trap out.
If you want to collect a few roaches, leave the jar out overnight or for several days. The boiling water should be put into the jar to kill the roaches. They can be put into a compost bin or flushed down the toilet.Make sure you solved your roach problem by setting the trap again.A new piece of bait will be added to the jar.As needed, repeat.
Step 13: The red wine bottle is a good bait.
Pick up a bottle that is near-empty.The glass or container design should prevent the roaches from climbing out of it.A bottle with a narrow neck will do.It will need a small amount of wine left in it.If it is a dry red wine, you can add sugar to it.Try some sugar and water with some fruit if you don't want to use alcohol. The water should be boiled first to make sure it doesn't go moldy before the work on the roaches is done.
Step 14: There is cooking oil all over the top of the bottle.
This will cause a slide at the bottom of the bottle.Use a pipe cleaner or another long-handled brushing tool to spread a liquid just below the neck.It will be difficult for fallen roaches to get traction when climbing back up.
Step 15: The trap needs to be set.
You can place the wine bottle near the compost heap or in a dark corner of the kitchen. For at least one night, leave it out.It may take a couple of nights to get the right composition to attract the animals. The roaches like the smell of wine or beer. They climb onto the top of the bottle, slip on the oil, and fall into the bottom. There is a trail of spilled wine on the side of the bottle. The promise of sweeter things to come may help lead the roaches into your trap.
Step 16: Dispose of the roaches.
When you check your trap in the morning, make sure to put some hot water into the bottle to kill the roaches.Make sure the hot water works by leaving it in the bottle for a minute or two.You can dispose of the dead roaches by pouring the hot water from the bottle into a garden, compost heap, or toilet bowl.Continue to try if one bottle doesn't solve your problem.A new bottle can be used to set the trap. The number of roaches caught should decline over time as fewer insects will fall into your trap.Pair the wine-bottle method with the jar method and the duct-tape method. You should set up different traps in different areas of your home. One trap might be catching more roaches due to its location or bait type, not because of its trapping mechanism.
