Daffodils need to be winterized each year before they bloom. You need to remove the bulbs from the ground before planting them in the spring in warmer climates. This may be the only time it is needed. They can stay in the ground any other time. You can have beautiful flowers next season if you prepare correctly.
Step 1: When the leaves are yellow and dead, remove the bulbs.
Daffodils may not flower next season if they are kept in the ground until the leaves are yellow.Within 6 weeks of the flower dying, the leaves die.To find the bulbs, use a trowel or shovel.During the current season, bulbs store energy for the next season. It is important to leave the plant until it dies on its own because the leaves will collect energy for next year's blooms.
Step 2: The bulbs are from the root clumps.
If you have daffodils for a long time, there may be multiple bulbs in a single clump. To see the bulbs, shake the soil free from the clump.Pull the bulbs apart to separate them.If you separated the bulbs, leave them in the sun. This will damage them.
Step 3: Sort out any bulbs that have been damaged.
Daffodil bulbs are heavy and should feel firm.If the bulb is brown or feels soft, it may be a sign of bulb rot.Daffodils that have been found with infections should not be replanted. If you plant them in the same place, there is a chance they will get sick.
Step 4: Remove the roots with shears.
The roots meet the bulb and you have to cut it with shears. When storing bulbs, trimming the roots helps prevent early growth.
Step 5: The bulbs must be dry for 24 hours.
After trimming the bulbs, keep them on a tray. The bulbs should be dried before being stored. The bulbs should be kept in a cool place.
Step 6: The bulbs should be placed in a bag.
An opaque bag will help keep the light out from the bulbs. The bag should be kept open to keep the air flowing to the bulbs. If you are storing multiple flower bulbs, you should write their names on the outside of the bag.A netted bag can be used to help regulate the flow of air, but it won't block light.
Step 7: The bulbs should be stored in a dry place for at least 6 to 8 weeks.
The bulbs can be stored in a basement, cellar, or garage. The temperature should be between 60 and 65 F.If the area they are stored in is below freezing, the bulbs will not survive.
Step 8: If you live in a warm climate, put the bulbs in the fridge.
Daffodils may not bloom next season if the bulbs are left out.The bag of daffodil bulbs should be kept out of direct light.Keep the bulbs away from food.
Step 9: Keep fruits away from the bulbs.
The flower inside the bulb can be killed by apples. If you store daffodil bulbs in a fridge, keep them out of the fruit.
Step 10: The bulbs should be replanted in December or early January.
The bulbs have been chilling for 6 to 8 weeks so they can bloom in the spring. The bulbs should be replanted with at least 3 inches of soil.Add a few bulbs to the hole to promote healthy spring growth.
