The password for the Catalyst 2960-C Layer 3 switch is default.
I received a Catalyst 2960-C switch, but I am not able to sign into its web GUI to set it up.I can't log in either way with the internet explorer or the network assistant.According to the documentation provided by the company, the default password is simply cisco. It doesn't work.I've searched for other default passwords, but none of them worked.I've tried to reset the switch several times.Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.
I haven't worked with the GUI/Network Assistant in a while, but if you haveAAA configured then the local password is going to be used.I have two questions with that being said.
He received a Catalyst switch according to the original poster. He doesn't tell us if he received it as a fresh out of the box switch or if it was from someone who might have changed something in the configuration.
I'm not sure if it's the case with the 2960-C, but many IOS devices are shipped with a one time use ID and password configured. If someone did not create a new user ID after logging in, then you won't be able to log in after that.
Password recovery to ignore the existing configuration and start from scratch would be the best approach for this issue.
I tried leaving the usernames and passwords blank and also tried using a capital "C" for the password.Neither works.I've tried to connect to the switch with Putty.I get a message that says "Password required, but none set" when I try this. The window closes on its own.
This is a brand new switch that I purchased through NewEgg.I did a reset on the device after I discovered I couldn't sign into it.I am not sure if that would mess up the one time password, but I have seen people recommend doing a password recovery.I bought this switch for learning purposes because I'm a complete newbie to IOS.Can you tell me how to recover my password or give me a link to do it?Will a console cable be required to do this?
Even though you haven't configured anything yet, you are able to telnet to the switch.I would like to know what address you used for the telnet session.Maybe there was a pre-configured one.You have not configured your device for remote access yet, so the error you are getting is normal. If you console to it, what happens?

I was unsuccessful in attempting to console into this switch.I used to get a "unable to open connection: unable to configuration serial port" when I looked at the recommended settings in the URL you provided. My laptop does not have an onboard serial port, so I'm using a brand new ethernet-DB9 cable as well as a DB9-USB cable.I'm stuck because I have all the correct settings in Putty and my cables are new.I have a private address of 192.168.2.105 assigned to me by my routers, which is not the default address that they claim to have out of the box.I know this is the address it has because I can get to the GUI log in via it.
The switch can be reset to the factory default. Please note that your config will be lost with this procedure.
Hold the Mode button. The switch blinks after 3 seconds.Hold down the Mode button. The switch stops working after 7 more seconds.
Express Setup is described in the Getting started guide.

N.B.Please make sure that your PC is connected to the switch, as the box acts as a DHCP server, and that you adjust your network settings accordingly. After finishing your basic config, you should be OK.
The enable password and enable secret password are used to control access. They will not be able to use the internet. There needs to be an access level password for both telnet and SSH.Depending on how the device is configured, there are several ways to change access level passwords. The simple thing to do for a bare bones device is to set the password under the vty.User name and password can be configured on the device if the vty has been configured with login local. If aaa new-model has been configured, you would either need to change the user name and password on the device or specify an authenticating server.
