The boys hid a nail in Uncle Silas's hat when things in the house began to disappear.They can use Uncle Silas as a cover for their misdeeds if he seems to be forgetting things.When Uncle Silas finds a nail, he puts it on the mantle and walks away.The boys put a spoon in Uncle Silas' pocket.He takes the blame for the boys.The boys fill the rat holes in his cellar to make him feel guilty.Uncle Silas ignores Tom and Huck when he comes upon them hiding in the cellar.For the life of him, he can't remember when he did it, so he says aloud to himself.I could show her that I am responsible for the rats.Let it go, but never mind.I think it wouldn't do any good.Uncle Silas trusts the boys to do the right thing.

Many slaves, including children, are owned by Aunt Sally and Uncle Silas.Jim, who they have captured and believe is a runaway slave, is chained up by his feet and hands.They treat Jim the same as two slave owners might treat a runaway slave.Uncle Silas and Aunt Sally came in to see if he was comfortable and had enough to eat, and both of them were kind as they could be.

Aunt Sally and Uncle Silas were told how Jim helped care for Tom after Jim was freed.He is allowed in their home as a friend of the boys.The paradoxes of the 'kind slave-owner' are explored by Twain.Slave-owners are often thought of as evil, like the cruel slave owner in the movie 12 Years a Slave.Some slave-owners were cruel, but others were capable of kindness.When Jim is chained up, Silas and Sally lead him in prayer.The reader can ask how people who are kind can support a terrible thing like slavery.
