Maples are a popular tree in the landscape.Maples have a wonderful color in the fall.Maples and other trees are prone to pests called gloomy scale.
The insect that protects itself with a small covering is called a gloomy scale.There are soft maples like silver and red.Grapes, native hollies, sweetgum, and mulberry can be affected by gloomy scale.
There is a scale on the bark of the tree.It will look as if it has bumps on the bark.When the bark is covered with dark bumps, it will look like a mold.Sometimes the trunk and branches can be covered two or three layers deep.When the bark is covered with a gloomy scale, people mistake it for a mold.There will be a branch dieback.The scale will increase in number through the spring.
Control of gloomy scale can be difficult since it has a covering for protection.During the dormant season, spraying a horticulture or dormant oil on a tree will be the most effective chemical treatment.Don't spray oil during the growing season because it can damage the buds and leaves on the tree.If you want to know when the product you are considering should be sprayed, read the label.It will be more difficult to get the thorough coverage that is needed for control of large trees, so spraying may not be worth it.
Improving growing conditions will help control the gloomy scale.Stressed trees are more likely to be affected by diseases.If you haven't done so before, submit a sample of the soil to see if it's in balance.Good tree growth can be encouraged by the proper amount of fertilization.Do not assume that applying something every year works.Call the Wayne County Extension office to find out how to submit a soil sample.During times of dry weather, trees should be watered.Instead of having grass growing under the tree, have a layer of mulch so that the grass isn't taking up the water and nutrients before it can get to the roots.
With proper tree care and catching the scale when it first starts, gloomy scale can be prevented from turning into a bigger problem later on.
