You might feel confident dyeing your own hair at home, but it can be difficult to do someone else's.Since the person is dependent on you to help them, it can be a little nerve wracking. It's never fear! There are some tips and tricks you can use to get a hair color.
Step 1: Start with hair that has not been washed.
Freshly washed hair may seem ideal for dyeing someone's hair, but this actually increases the chances that their scalp will be irritated by the color. They should wait 2 days after the last time they washed their hair to make sure they have a protective layer on their head.It will be easier to section the person's hair if you wait for 2 days after their last wash.
Step 2: Divide the person's hair into 4 even sections.
The person has tangles in their hair.Divide the hair down the middle and from ear to ear using a comb to make 4 even sections.Use a clip to hold it in place. If you have long hair, you might need to divide it into 8 sections.
Step 3: You can drape a towel or hairdresser's cape on the person.
The skin around their shoulders will be protected from the hair dye.You may want to encourage the person to wear an old t-shirt or something else they don't care about just in case some of the dye gets on their clothes. You can buy a hairdresser's cape at a beauty supply store.
Step 4: If you want to prevent staining, apply lip balm to the person's hair.
It will protect the skin from being stained by the dye.Use your fingers to smooth a layer of petroleum jelly or lip balm over the 2 in (1.3 cm) of skin around the person's head and ears.Go all the way around the head and neck to protect the skin from the dye.
Step 5: Take the dye and mix it.
Before you begin mixing the ingredients, read the instructions that came with the box of dye.You will need to mix 2 items together. If the person has long hair, you will need 2 boxes of hair dye.
Step 6: A strand test can be done.
After mixing the dye, apply it to a small strand of hair on the back of the person's head. After about 10 minutes, set a timer and check the strand to see if it has developed to the shade that you want.Let the strand dry before rinsing out the color. When you get the shade, remember the final time. You should show the person the strand after you wash it.It is important to make sure this is the color they want, because this will be what all of their hair will look like.
Step 7: If you want to work towards the back, you need to unclip the top sections of hair.
Take one of the front sections out of its clip and apply dye to it.After you apply the dye on the section next to it, unclip it so you can work towards the back of the head. The sections of hair clipped up on top of the person's head will be the most visible after you finish applying the dye.
Step 8: Start by applying the dye at the roots.
If you want to sweep the color onto the hair at the roots, you have to dip the brush into the dye. This will cause the hair in that section to be completely saturated with dye.Take the dye out of the person's hair. The hair should be saturated with the dye.You can use a toothbrush or mascara to highlight your hair.
Step 9: Continue until all of the hair is covered in dye.
Keep unclipping sections 1 at a time and use the brush to apply the dye until each section is saturated.Depending on the length and thickness of the person's hair, this may take a while.
Step 10: When you're done applying the dye to your hair, you can set a timer.
You can use an egg timer or a phone timer. This will help to make sure that you don't leave the dye on for too long. The box tells you how long it will take to achieve the desired color on your strand test.If the box recommends letting the dye develop for 15 minutes, use that as your guideline. If the person liked the results of the strand test, then you should let the dye develop for 10 minutes.
Step 11: Use warm water to rinse the hair dye out.
Once the time is up, have the person lean over a sink or bathtub and rinse the dye out of their hair. The person's hair can be washed with the faucet or shower head. They should rinse their hair until the water clears. In an office chair that reclines slightly, have them lean back over the sink.It will be easier to rinse the color out with no water in their eyes.
Step 12: Let the conditioner sit for 3 to 5 minutes.
The conditioner should be applied all over the hair.Use cool or warm water to rinse the conditioner out.If you notice hair dye coming out in the water when you rinse, keep rinsing until it runs clear again. After you rinse out your hair, many box hair dye kits come with a small container or packet of conditioner to apply.Follow the instructions for how to apply the conditioner in your kit.You can use any conditioner that you have on hand.
Step 13: Use a hair dryer or air dry the hair.
Wrap the person's hair in a towel and squeeze it to get rid of the excess water. They can either style their hair on their own or use a blow dryer to dry it.
