Tie-dyeing adds personality to clothing and fabrics.Using rubber bands or string, the material of the item to be dyed is bunched together to make different patterns, shapes and colors. You can try a variety of simple patterns.
Step 1: You will need supplies for your project.
Tie-dyeing is a messy activity, so you will want to set up a work area that will allow you to work with colored dye and not make a mess.A plastic covering is needed for your work surface. There is a paint tarp.Garbage bags can be laid down according to your needs. You will need an apron or smock to protect your clothes. It is a good idea to wear old clothes.Use them whenever you tie dye.Wear gloves. They will protect your hands from the hot water and dye.Wrap your fabrics with rubber bands to create different designs. If you choose the marble-made circular design, you will need about half a dozen marbles. You will need scissors, a metal spoon, and tongs to remove clothing from a dye bathe.Remove cleanser or bleach. They will be needed to clean up.
Step 2: Pick one or more dyes.
You can either buy individual packets of dye or use bottled dye.You can buy kits at a craft store. If you don't have a squirt bottle, buy one.A dozen shirts will be dyed with sixteen ounces.
Step 3: Pick out your colors.
There are many colors to choose from.During the tie dye process, some colors that wouldn't otherwise be compatible work when they're gradually blended together.Be imaginative.rainbow is one of the most popular choices. The rainbow color is made up of yellow, orange, aqua, blue, purple and fuschia.Blue will be made with a lighter amount of turquoise. For a darker result, try mixing brown, turquoise, and bronze.Jade brown, turquoise and olive green are greenish.A green finish is created by green apple, yellow and olive. There is a bright combination of purple and turquoise.
Step 4: You can choose the materials you want to dye.
It works well with white cotton. You can use nylon, wool or silk.White cotton t-shirts are often used for tie-dyeing, but there are lots of other possibilities. If you're working with cotton, put aside 1 cup of salt.Salt is added to the dye bath. You'll need a cup of white vinegar if you're dyeing nylon, silk or wool. The process for sensitive materials is gentle.
Step 5: You should set aside buckets for the dye baths.
Do not use plastic containers if you can.The plastic will stain. There will be hot water and dye in the buckets. They should hold about 3 gallons each. You will need a bucket for every color you plan to use.
Step 6: Use rubber bands to tie-dye your t-shirts.
Once the rubber bands are removed, the material can be shaped in a variety of ways. The parts of the fabric that are bunched together are not reached by the dye from the immersed item.More white areas can't be reached by the dye if the fabric is wrapped tightly. If you want, you can use string instead of rubber bands.
Step 7: A circular pattern can be made.
The core of the circle should be found in the center of your fabric. You can slip a marble inside the section if you pinch it.There is a rubber band behind the marble.Add rubber bands and marbles. There are rubber bands that prevent the material from being dyed.White circles will be left on the dyed background.
Step 8: You can make a striped pattern.
The fabric should be rolled from side to side or top to bottom.Top to bottom stripes will make horizontal stripes. There are spaces along the fabric with rubber bands. The striped pattern will look neat if the spaces are made even.White stripes will be produced when the bands are finished.
Step 9: You can make a mirror design.
The shirt should be folded in half.A t-shirt can be folded using a mirror image, so that the arms overlap. The pattern will run side to side. The bottom of the shirt should be folded up to the neck to make the mirror top to bottom.
Step 10: You can make a spiral pattern.
Pinch the center of the t-shirt or other fabric and twist it until it is in a circle.Use rubber bands to hold it in place. If you want to make a spiral design using a t-shirt as an example, you can twist the shirt around your finger and place it at the table. The shirt has axes around it.Wrap the shirt in rubber bands when you remove your finger.Three or four bands should be fixed to the fabric so that they fit in the center of the material.
Step 11: There is a marbleized tie-dye pattern.
Put the fabric into a ball.Wrap the fabric with rubber bands. The more white areas you leave on the fabric, the tighter it is.
Step 12: The dye baths should be prepared before tie-dye begins.
Put hot water in your containers. It is possible to heat up water in the microwave or tea kettle. The buckets should be arranged so that you begin with the lightest dye.If your fabric is going to be the same color, you only need one three-gallon container. It is possible to leave just enough water to cover the garment. The garment can be bunched in a smaller container.
Step 13: The fabric dye should be mixed with water.
The package has instructions.Add powdered dye to the bath by dissolving it in hot water. It will take about 14 cup dye to 1 cup hot water. For brighter colors, use twice the amount of dye.Adding a cup of salt to the dye bath will bring out the cotton's color.Silk, wool, and nylon can be protected with 1 cup white vinegar. To make sure the dye is in the water, stir it well with a metal spoon. If you're using salt, make sure it's dissolved.
Step 14: The fabric needs to be immersed in the dye bath.
If you're using more than one color, hold the section of the fabric to be dyed. When you're done, remove it.If you want to repeat the process with a new section of fabric, move on to the next dye bath. You can let the fabric soak up the color in the dye bath if you want it to be dark. The darker the color, the longer you leave the fabric in the dye bath. When the item looks a little darker than your preferred shade, remove it.It will lighten up when it dries. To immerse a multicolored item in a dye bath, use tongs or rubber gloves.Use your scissors to cut the rubber bands.
Step 15: The tie-dyed fabric needs to be washed.
The white areas of the fabric will be affected by the dye.The "tie-dye flair" is added by this.Under the warm water, rinse the item.Pick a mild detergent for your item.Continue to rinse as the water cools. When the water runs clear, rinse in cool water.Don't dye your hands, keep those rubber gloves on.The excess water should be squeezed out gently. You can use an old towel to roll the item.Hang to dry or machine dry.
