Silk flowers are an alternative to real flowers. If you want to change the color of your silk flowers, you can use fabric dye.Use a dye bath to dye your silk flowers. If you want your flowers to be light and dark, dip-dye them.
Step 1: The bowl should be filled with hot water.
If you are dyeing a lot of silk flowers, you should use a large bowl.A normal-sized bowl will work if you are only dyeing a few silk flowers.Make sure you have enough hot water in the bowl to submerge your silk flowers. To find out how much water you should use, read the instructions that came with your fabric dye.
Step 2: The bowl of water has fabric dye in it.
You can use a fabric dye to make your silk flowers. If you are using a small packet of fabric dye, pour the whole packet into the water. If you have a container of liquid fabric dye, you should only need a small amount of dye.The dye should be put into the water with a spoon. The darker the final color, the more fabric dye you use.For more specific recommendations on how much dye to use, check the instructions that came with your fabric dye.It is possible to make your dye look softer with fabric medium. If you want your silk flowers to look really natural, mix a little of your paint or fabric dye with fabric medium. It will give you a softer finish.
Step 3: The silk flowers should be removed from the stems.
Pull the top of the silk flowers away from the stems until they separate. If the stems are not attached, it will be easier to dye your silk flowers. You can still dye your silk flowers with the stems attached.
Step 4: The silk flowers should be submerged in the dye.
If you want to completely cover your silk flowers, dunk them in the dye bath one at a time. The flowers can float to the top of the bath. When your flowers are in the dye bath, stir them with a spoon. If you want the stems to stick out of the dye bath, submerge the flowers in it.The stems should be on the edge of the bowl. You should dye a lot of silk flowers in batches. If you try to dye too many flowers in the same bowl, you might not be able to do it properly.
Step 5: The silk flowers should be in the dye bath for at least 30 minutes.
The darker the final color, the longer you allow your flowers to soak in the dye bath.As your flowers are soaking in the dye bath, you can periodically stir them to help it get all over the petals.
Step 6: Take the flowers out of the dye and put them on a towel.
You don't mind getting stained if you use an old towel. Before you remove the flowers, make sure your hands don't get stained with dye by putting disposable gloves on.Lift each flower out of the dye bath and shake it over the bowl to get rid of excess dye.
Step 7: The flowers should be dry.
It may take several hours for your silk flowers to dry.Once your flowers are dry to the touch, you can remove them from the towel and put them back on the stems.
Step 8: A paper plate with fabric dye on it.
You can use a fabric dye to change the color of your silk flowers. There is a thin layer of dye covering the entire flat part of the plate.Don't mix the dye with water. To give your silk flowers a deep, vibrant color, you want this plate of dye to be very concentrated.
Step 9: Add water and fabric dye to a second paper plate.
You can use the same fabric dye on the second plate. It doesn't need to be exact. You can use a dye on the second plate to create a lighter color on your silk flowers. You can use a different color dye on the second paper plate if you have fabric dye in multiple colors.Your flowers will be more than one color.
Step 10: One of your silk flowers should be dipped into the fabric dye.
As you dip the petals, be gentle. If you want the petals to be completely saturated, gently press them down into the dye.The base of the petals can be dyed just the tips of them.If you want to see which petals have more dye on them, you can dip them into the dye at an angle.
Step 11: The petals should be dipped into the fabric dye.
If you want to cover up the dye from before, don't press the petals down. You want to dye the ends of the petals. The petals should be light and dark at the end.To create a random, natural look, try holding the silk flower at an angle and rotating the tips through the dye.
Step 12: To dry the silk flower, place it on a paper plate.
If you are dyeing a lot of silk flowers, place them on an old towel to dry so you have more room.Wait several hours for the rest of your silk flowers to dry.Remove the towel and display them.
