Offspring's Dr Patrick Reid died in the show.
Why did Patrick have to die?Matthew Le Nevez was asked if he wanted to leave.I don't know if Nina will ever be happy. What was the deal with those commercials?
There were a lot of questions on social media last night after Offspring killed off a favourite character.
TV Tonight spoke to the producers about why he was written out, as well as an angry response to network promo.
It was a powerful episode in which a seemingly minor accident involving Patrick raised a lot of questions about getting checked immediately, organ donation and mortality.
Banks says it's not as specific as that.He was under a lot of pressure to be over there because he is a hot property.
We knew there would be a point where we had to let him go.We had to think long-term because we knew we had two series, S4 and S5.We had to think about a future without him.We debated what the exit would be.
Le Nevez spoke about his desire for US opportunities in an earlier interview. If only I had known.
The need to give him such a dramatic exit was because he was on borrowed time.Is the door open for a return if he wasn't written out?
It was not logical for Patrick to leave her because he was so committed to one another.
The nature of the relationship between Nina and Patrick made it impossible to do that again.
When we started Offspring, we wanted to keep the stories moving forward and never repeat the same things. That is a danger in a romantic comedy. They lose their life very quickly if you start repeating things.
Conventional wisdom was that you couldn't have somebody be pregnant in a series, but we went ahead and did it anyway because we were determined to keep the story going.
It is something you have to deal with when you are doing a series about family life and love.
Banks says that he was shocked initially. We talked to him about the future. When he found out, and this is both with Matt and Asher, they were quite emotional about it, but very much on board and knew what a great story it was.
Next week, Nina will attend Patrick's funeral.I was impressed with how well the secret had been kept, with up to 90 people involved in those scenes.
That is what I am proudest of.Everyone involved in the show has been asked to keep the secret and respect the story. We were in the hands of so many people.Banks says that you can't really enforce that sort of secret.
The promo looked like it was in danger of giving it away. The cast and crew have done a great job of keeping it a secret. The press as well.
It is a testament to everyone's integrity that there are so many scripts floating around.
While those directly involved with the show kept their secrets, it was the network that teased the deaths of Patrick, Billie or Jimmy, all of which were central to Nina's world. The network wanted to make the scenes ground-breaking and leave us talking for years to come, but it denied them the chance to surprise the audience.
In my case, this kind of subject has been dealt with in series 6 times and 5 times the networks chose to let the natural story tell its own case and didn't promo it.
I don't think it's a good idea to use it as a promo. It is a shame that people will watch the show through that lens.It has happened.
I think the spilled milk is an error.I think it is wrong and sad, but that is my view.
The final beat of an episode is not something I like to see in a promo. It is like reading the last page of a book. That is a move that I don't like in film and television.
She had first hand knowledge of how popular the show was because of the promo.
She was sitting in a cafe reading the first three scripts of the next season when she heard three women talking about how it was definitely Billie.
It has happened a lot.Michael Lucas is writing a script while sitting in cafes listening to people talk.
The season finale next week will show more emotion for fans with Nina facing both birth and death.
"Season 5 is being plotted at the moment and there's definitely an upswing because it was plotted with that in mind."
Do you know if there is a chance of Don Hany returning as Dr. Chris in Season One?
What about Patrick? There are fantasy moments in Offspring. Is Matthew Le Nevez going to be in Season 5?
I knew it was a bit after the event, but I couldn't leave Pertinax and Jennome's incorrect statements about Matt le Nevez undisturbed. If you want to see one of Australia's finest young actors, go watch Society Murders or watch Parers War which will be on the ABC later this year.If you don't believe me.I bet the two critics are men.
I am not happy with the killing off of Patrick.I don't think it was wise for the writers to kill him off so soon after Nina was through so much turmoil.!
The Offspring is not filled with tragedy but with laughter and good humor.?
I agree with Pertinax that Matthew Le Nevez didn't have much acting ability, he was mainly there to look good, smile a lot and deliver a bit of angst occasionally.I guess that is the way the character was written.
Let's hope her next love is more livelier, and that the producers tone down her crazy dreams. This series was done andirritating.I wonder if the obstetricians of this world cringe at the idea of their characters wearing high heels and jeans.
I'm glad they didn't remove her from the show, she's the strongest character at the moment and extremely unstable. It could have been her.
Channel TEN is the worst place to give away key parts of shows. In the season finale promo for Elementary, they told us who Moriarty was, rather than having it be a slow reveal over the episode.
Half a dozen stories about this have been run on news.com.au, and 10 knows they have a few viewers left.!
I am not allowed to comment on the promos because I did not see them.I cried when kate and nina entered the hospital room.I enjoy Patricks character and have watched offspring from the beginning. He will be missed. It will be interesting to see what they do with season 5.
I don't watch another show based on the trials of being a single mother because I tune in to see who died.
