Mark Green's Death...'ER' Star AnthonyEdwards Remembers Dr.

Anthony Edwards plays a fictional medical doctor in the television series ER.He was the main character of the series for the first eight seasons, and for most of his time on the show, he was a mediator and occasional authority figure.The only other original character to die was Greene.

Mark was raised by his parents, David and Ruth.The family moved frequently and lived all over the country, including: Jacksonville, Florida, Norfolk, Virginia, Corpus Christi, Texas, Washington D.C., Kings Bay, Georgia, and Hawaii.Mark had a strained relationship with his father and was closer to his mother.In order to upset his father, he would act out and aim his goals in a different direction.Mark thought his father's Navy career mattered more to him than his family, only to learn that David was on track to be an admiral and turned down the chance to come home and help Mark deal with a bully.A time when his family was in Hawaii was the most memorable time of his childhood.

After graduating from high school, the two of them developed a romantic relationship.They were together for a long time in college, and at some point after he graduated from medical school, he married her.His daughter was born a short time later.He met Doug Ross while in medical school.He was awarded the position of Chief Resident of the Emergency Department after completing his internship and residency there.While there, he continued his friendship with Doug Ross, who is now a pediatrician, as well as with Dr. Susan Lewis, an ER resident and nurse manager.Although he enjoys working the ER, his marriage has been strained by the many nights on call and the long hours, as well as his wife's decision to complete law school.

On St. Patrick's Day 1994, the chief resident wakes up to help his friend Doug, the emergency physician who often comes in to sober up on his nights off.He and Susan confide in each other about their personal lives while on break.During the same episode, Jen gets Mark to visit a private practice near the hospital to explore the possibility of leaving his job at the ER and getting more family-friendly hours.He decided the "clean" medicine wasn't his cup of tea.At the ER, an older woman wanted to have a hangnail removed, despite the fact that she'd be charged $180.When Carol is rushed into the ER after a suicide attempt, everyone has to get back to work.

The marriage of Dr. Greene becomes shaky during the first season.When David Morgenstern offered him an attending physician's position, he readily accepted.As a newly admitted member of the bar, Jen has been clerking for a judge in Milwaukee and is tired of living separately to accommodate her job.Rachel and Jen left Chicago first for Milwaukee and later for St. Louis after Rachel began an affair with a coworker.

After the death of a pregnant woman in childbirth in the first season of "Love's Labor Lost", the after-effects of this case linger into the second season.

In a Christmas episode, he explains that he is the son of a Jew and a Catholic.He lights a Hanukkah candle.Some Yiddish is understood by Greene.[5]

As his career becomes more difficult, he needs to make decisions that upset his friends, such as selecting Dr. Kerry Weaver for Chief Resident, angering Susan Lewis, who is a good friend of hers, and she dislikes Weaver's harsh attitude.As his administrative tasks often put him at odds with Doug's wild ways and he is disgusted by his personal problems to the point where he briefly overrules and belittles Doug, his friendship with Dr. Ross becomes strained.

When his feelings for Dr. Lewis increase, she leaves the hospital for a job in Arizona.In the episode "Random Acts", he was brutally beaten in the ER men's room.The attack was thought to be revenge for the death of the patient who may have been mistreated by the doctor.It is implied that his attacker was a psychotic individual who was randomly attacking doctors.The motive of the attacker is never revealed.After buying a gun and intimidating a group of teenagers on a train platform, he throws it in the river.He struggles through a large part of Season 4 but comes to terms with his attack in Season 5 when he helps Nigerian-born janitor Mobilage Ekabo reveal his memories of torture, allowing him to obtain political asylum and avoid deportation.

The re-entrance of Mark's parents comes after the passing of his father.After Doug's father and new wife were killed in a car wreck, he and Doug traveled to California to reconcile his affairs with his parents.His relationship with his father is strained and his mother has a number of medical conditions associated with aging.Mark's mother thought his birth was a mistake, as she didn't know his father well and married quickly when she got pregnant.Mark's distrust of the Navy puts him at odds with David when they argue over whether Ruth should be treated in a base hospital or a civilian hospital.Mark was left on edge when he clashed with Kerry Weaver over Robert Romano's successful drive for the chief of staff position.

After his marriage ends, his personal life is a mess.He follows in Doug's footsteps, having several affairs and setting up three dates in one day.He has a brief relationship with a needy desk clerk.She found out that Greene doesn't really love her.Elizabeth Corday is a British surgeon.Corday is in Chicago on an exchange program.Her relationship with Peter Benton fails as well as her advances on Corday.In Season 5, they begin dating, eventually forming a happy relationship.

Greene discovers that his father is suffering from lung cancer.David moved to Chicago and stayed with Mark after he realized he could no longer live alone.He warms up to Elizabeth very quickly after an awkward first meeting.Father and son reach an emotional bonding that heals the difficult relationship from Mark's youth, and David eventually succumbs to his cancer.

Mark and Elizabeth move in together.After buying a house, he and Elizabeth get married and have a daughter.When the abusive father of a patient goes on a killing rampage after losing his son to social workers their happiness is threatened.He tries to get his son back by killing and injuring a number of people.He was brought to the ER after being shot by a bystander.He is going to an operating room after his treatment.The patient goes into cardiac arrest when alone in the elevator with Greene who doesn't give him a defibrillation.He lied to show that he tried to save the patient.Elizabeth suspects what Mark did.Rachel moved in with Mark and Elizabeth after arguments with her mother.Mark and Elizabeth's marriage was put at risk by Rachel and her drug use in season 8.

While working on a patient, Greene loses control of his faculties and is unable to speak.He was diagnosed with an aggressive form of brain cancer, called glioblastoma multiforme, which is thought to be inoperable.When he had a seizure while arguing with Carter, he tried to hide his condition, but his cover was blown.A New York City neurosurgeon, Dr. Burke, is available to give a second opinion.They can perform an operation on New Year's Eve 2000 if the tumor is not in a critical section of his brain.It takes him a while to return to his old self after his surgery, but things appear to be positive.Dr. Burke says he can't operate again because the regrowth of the tumor is in part of his brain where an operation would render him comatose."You should have been dead a year ago, Mark," Burke said.You got married and your daughter was born.

At this point, Mark and Elizabeth are where Rachel is staying.When her baby sister gets hold of some ecstasy in her backpack and nearly dies after taking it in the show "Damage is Done", her recreational drug use becomes apparent.When Rachel shows up, Mark can barely control his anger at her, berating her for lying to him and putting her in danger.He hugs Rachel when she starts to cry because he knows Elizabeth is angry enough for both of them.When Mark refuses to throw Rachel out of the house, Elizabeth says she won't return home with her until Rachel leaves and moves into a hotel.Mark doesn't want to tell Elizabeth about his condition, so he stays with Susan during his treatments.Mark tells Elizabeth she shouldn't pretend to be his wife just because he's sick, but she returns anyway and helps Mark as his illness progresses.Mark's time in the ER comes to an end as he suffers more medical problems.

He resigned himself to his fate and decided that he would rather have three good months than suffer from his treatments.The older woman that he met on his last day in the ER was seen on the first episode of ER.She complains about how painful the hangnail is.He told her that he has an inoperable tumor, asked another doctor to treat her, and told the patient not to return to the ER again.He leaves the ER, stops his treatments, tells John Carter that he will now "set the tone" and takes Rachel on a last-minute trip to Hawaii to rebuild his relationship with her.

After several moves around the island and some conflict with a surly Rachel, Mark suffers from increased symptoms, including a seizure, prompting her to call Elizabeth, who comes to Hawaii with her daughter.Rachel comes to her father's room at night.Mark woke up and smiled at Rachel, telling her that he was dreaming of her and how she used to love balloons.He told her that he was trying to think of a piece of advice that every father should tell his daughter, and that she should be generous with her time.Rachel told her father that she remembered a song Mark used to sing to her when she was a baby and that he could listen to it while he slept.He walks through an empty ER while the song plays.Elizabeth found out that he had died the next morning.

Carter discovered two faxes that had arrived earlier in the episode "The Letter".The first one is read to the staff by him.He had worked at the Chicago County ER for many years and had written a letter about his feelings about the staff.Someone notices that Carter is holding the second fax and is upset.The second letter was written by Elizabeth, notifying them that Mark had died at sunrise, his favorite time of the day.She said that she sent the first letter to show the staff what she thought of them.Frank asked if he should post the second fax on the staff bulletin board, and Carter told him to.The letter and the news of his passing send many of the ER's staff into emotional turmoil, with Kerry Weaver going from second-guessing to crying and stating her regrets to Sandy.Jack Lemmon's character in Mister Roberts reads two similar letters at the end of the film, which is similar to the scene in this episode.Susan Lewis revealed in the episode that he died at the age of 38 and his birth year was 1963.At the end of the episode, as the staff rush out to the ambulance bay to handle incoming casualties, the wind blowing through the open door tears one page from the bulletin board.
