He is an American singer-songwriter and actor."For the Good Times", "Sunday Mornin' Comin' Down" and "Help Me Make It Through the Night" were all hits for other artists.Nashville songwriters such as Shel Silverstein collaborated with Kristopher.[2]

A key creative force in the outlaw country music movement that shuns the Nashville music machine in favor of independent songwriting and producing was formed in 1985 by Kris Kristofferson and the Highwaymen.In 2004, Kristopher was in the Country Music Hall of Fame.He earned a Golden Globe Award for Best actor for his role in A Star Is Born.

Mary Ann Ashbrook was the mother of the U.S. Air Force major general.His parents had English, Scots-Irish, German, Swiss-German, and Dutch ancestry.Kristofferson's paternal grandfather was an officer in the Swedish Army.His father pushed him towards a military career when he was a child.[5]

Their home was in San Mateo, California because of his father's military service.He graduated from San Mateo High School in 1954.Kristofferson was an aspiring writer when he was at Pomona College."The Rock" and "Gone Are the Days" were both published in The Atlantic Monthly.The early stories show the roots of Kristofferson's concerns.The geographical feature that resembled the form of a woman was the subject of "The Rock".[6]

At the age of 17, Kristofferson took a summer job with a dredger.He said it was the hardest job he had ever done.[7]

When he appeared in "Faces in the Crowd" on March 31, 1959 for his achievements in collegiate rugby union, American football, and track and field, he experienced his first dose of fame.The Claremont Colleges Rugby Club was revived by him and his classmates.A Bachelor of Arts degree, summa cum laude, was obtained by Kristopher.He was elected to the organization as a junior.In 2004, Kristofferson mentioned philosophy professor Frederick Sontag as an influence in his life.[9]

He studied at Merton College and received a Rhodes Scholarship.He played rugby for his college and began writing songs after being awarded a Blue for boxing at Oxford.He met fellow Rhodes scholar, art critic, and poet Michael Fried at Oxford.Kris Carson was recorded for Top Rank Records with the help of his manager, Larry Parnes.Parnes was trying to sell Kristofferson to the British public as a "Yank at Oxford" and he was willing to accept that promotional approach if it helped his singing career, which he hoped would enable him to progress towards his goal of becoming a novelist.The early phase of his music career was unsuccessful.In 1960, he graduated with a B.Phil.There is a degree in English literature.He married his long-time girlfriend, Frances Mavia Beer, in 1961.10

Johnny Cash and Rita Coolidge were with Kris Kristofferson during Alumni Weekend in 1973.Professor Fred Sontag presented his award to him.[15]

Under pressure from his family, he joined the U.S. Army and attained the rank of captain.He got his helicopter pilot's license after completing flight training.He graduated from Ranger School.He was stationed in West Germany in the early 1960s as a member of the 8th Infantry Division.He formed a band after restarting his music career.When his tour in Germany ended, he was assigned to teach English literature at West Point.He decided to leave the Army and pursue a career in writing.His family disowned him because of his career decision.They saw it as a rejection of everything they stood for, even though Kristofferson had said he was proud of his time in the military, and received the Veteran of the Year Award at the 2003 American Veterans Awards ceremony.It was 21 and 22.

After leaving the army, he moved to Nashville.While struggling for success in music, he worked at a variety of odd jobs and was saddled with medical expenses from his son's defect in the esophagus.He and his wife separated.

He worked at Columbia Recording Studios.He asked June Carter to give him a tape of Johnny Cash.Cash put it on a pile with other people.He worked as a helicopter pilot for a south Louisiana firm.The last three years before he started performing were when he was a pilot.I would work a week in south Louisiana for PHI, flying and sitting on an oil platform.I would go back to Nashville at the end of the week and try to pitch the songs, then come back down and write for another week.I wrote 'Help Me Make It Through the Night' while sitting on an oil platform.I wrote a lot of things in south Louisiana.[23]

After giving Carter his tapes, Kristofferson landed a helicopter in Cash's front yard.A story about a man having a beer in one hand and some songs in the other upon arrival has been disproven, with the man saying, "It was still kind of an invasion of privacy that I wouldn't recommend."John had a pretty creative memory, but I don't think he was there.It was after hearing "Sunday Mornin' Comin' Down" that Cash decided to record it.

"Viet Nam Blues" was released by Dave Dudley in 1966.The single "Golden Idol/Killing Time" was not a hit when it was released in 1967.Billy Walker & the Tennessee Walkers hit the charts with "From the Bottle to the Bottom", while Ray Stevens and Jerry Lee performed "Sunday Mornin' Comin' Down" and "Jody and the Kid" respectively.Following Johnny Cash's introduction of him at the Newport Folk Festival, he achieved some success as a performer himself.

Monument Records had a recording artist named Kristopher.Combine Music was managed by Fred Foster, who also ran that label.In 1970 his debut album for Monument included a few new songs as well as many of his previous hits.The debut album was a flop, but it was re-released the following year under the title Me & Bobby McGee.There was still demand for Kristofferson's compositions."For the Good Times", "Help Me Make It Through The Night" and "Come Sundown" were written by Ray Price."For the Good Times" and "Sunday Morning Coming Down" both won "Song of the Year" from the Country Music Association in the same year.An individual received the same award from the two organizations for different songs.

Janis Joplin had a number one hit in 1971 with "Me and Bobby McGee" from her posthumous album Pearl.It stayed at the top of the charts for weeks after it was released.More hits followed from Ray Price, Joe Simon, Bobby Bare, and O.C."Help Me Make It Through the Night" is a song by Jerry Lee Lewis.Kenny Rogers recorded a version of "Me and Bobby McGee" in 1969 with The First Edition for the Ruby, Don't Take Your Love To Town album.

The Silver Tongued Devil and I was released in 1971."Anything I'll Ever Do Again" was included.It established Kristofferson's career as a recording artist.The Last Movie was directed by Dennis Hopper and Kristofferson made his acting debut in it.The First Great Rock Festivals of the Seventies features a portion of his performance.He released his third album, Border Lord, in 1971.The album was new and sales were slow.He won country song of the year for "Help Me Make It Through the Night" at the grammys that year."Why Me", the third single of Jesus Was a Capricorn, was a success and increased album sales despite initially having slow sales.It sold over one million copies and was awarded a gold disc by the RIAA.[26]

The Old Grey Whistle Test featured a performance of "Help Me Make It Through the Night" by Kris Kristofferson and Rita Coolidge.Al Green released a version of "For the Good Times" on his 1972 album I'm Still in Love with You.

For the next few years, he focused on acting.He appeared in three Sam Peckinpah films, as well as three films directed by Paul Mazursky.He received a Golden Globe Award for Best actor for his role in A Star Is Born.He turned down William Friedkin's film at the peak of his box office power.Despite his success with Streisand, Kris Kristofferson's solo musical career went downward with his ninth album, Shake Hands with the Devil.The two-part 1979 NBC-TV movie Freedom Road did not get good ratings.

In 1980's anti-Western Heaven's Gate, Kristofferson was cast in the lead role as the enigmatic Sheriff James Averill.The film gained critical recognition in subsequent years despite being a scandalous studio-bankrupting and industry-changing failure at the time.The Last days of Frank and Jesse James was directed by William Tannen.Amerika starred Robert Urich and Christine Lahti.He played the male lead in the film Millennium.He played a corrupt South Texas sheriff in John Sayles's Lone Star, a film that was nominated for an Oscar for Best Screenplay.He co-stars with Steven Seagal in 1997's Fire Down Below.

He played a mentor to Blade in the 1998 film.He reprised the role in two more films.In 1998 he starred in Dance with Me.He co-stars with Mel Gibson in Payback in 1999.He was in a Tim Burton movie.The title character in the Norwegian film Yohan was an old man.He co-stars in the two Dolphin Tale films.In 2012 Kristofferson was in a movie with Dolly Parton.The Motel Life and Angels Sing were both co-starred by Kristopher.The film Disappearances about whiskey running from Quebec to the US during the Great Depression was directed by Genevive Bujold.

Rita Coolidge met Kristopher after his singing success.An album titled Full Moon was released in 1973, it was a success thanks to numerous hit singles and nominations.His fifth album, Spooky Lady's Sideshow, was a commercial failure and set the trend for most of his career.The rough voice and anti-pop sound of Kris Kristofferson kept his own audience to a minimum.Willie Nelson's 1979 album (Willie Nelson) Sings Kristofferson reached number five on the U.S. Country Music chart and was certified Platinum in the US.

Kris Kristofferson traveled to Havana, Cuba, in 1979 to participate in the historic Havana Jam festival, which featured Rita Coolidge, Stephen Stills, the CBS Jazz All-Stars and Billy Swan.His performance can be seen in the documentary Havana Jam '79.

On November 18, 1979 Kristofferson and Coolidge appeared on The Muppet Show, where they sang "Help Me Make It Through the Night" and "We're All Alone" with forest animals.They divorced in 1980.

The Winning Hand, a double album consisting of remastered and updated performances of recordings the four artists had made for the Monument label during the mid-1960s, reached the top-ten on the U.S. country album.He concentrated on films for a time, appearing in the 1984 releases The Lost Honor of Kathryn Beck and Flashpoint.Nelson and Kristofferson were nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Song Score.The album, featuring Nelson-Kristofferson duets, was a huge success.

Nelson and Kris Kristofferson formed a supergroup called The Highwaymen with the help of Waylon and Johnny Cash.Highwayman was a success and the supergroup continued to work together.The single from the album, also entitled "Highwayman", and especially written for them, was awarded the Academy of Country Music's single of the year in 1985.Repossessed, a politically aware album that was a country success and a tribute to his heroes, including Martin Luther King Jr., Jesus, and Mahatma Gandhi, was released in 1985.Amerika was a series that attempted to depict life in America under Soviet control.

Despite the success of Highwayman 2 in 1990, Kristofferson's solo recording career waned in the early 1990s, though he continued to record with the Highwaymen.The 1996 film Lone Star by John Sayles rejuvenated the acting career of Kris Kristofferson.

The Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame was established in 1977.Mark Knopfler, Steve Earle, and Jackson Browne reworked some of Kris Kristofferson's favorite songs on The Austin Sessions, an album that was released in 1999.The album was recorded in San Francisco.

The Americana Music Association gave him the "Spirit of Americana" free speech award.He was in the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2004.His first album in 11 years, This Old Road, was released in 2006 after he received the Johnny Mercer Award.On April 21, 2007, he won the Johnny Cash Visionary Award.Cash's daughter presented the honor at the awards show.Cash, Hank Williams, Jr., and Reba McEntire were recipients."John was my hero before I was his friend, and anything with his name on it is really an honor in my eyes," he said.If I had thought that I'd be getting an award with his name on it, it would have helped me through a lot of hard times.[29]

In July of 2007, he played many of his hits for the studio 330 sessions.

On June 13, 2008, Kristofferson performed an acoustic in the round set with Patty Griffin and Randy Owen for a special taping of a PBS songwriters series.The performers played five songs."The Best of All Possible Worlds," "Darby's Castle", "Me and Bobby McGee," and "Here Comes that Rainbow Again" were included in the set.There was tapping done in Nashville.

On September 29, 2009, Kristopher released a new album called Closer to the Bone.Don Was is on the New West label."I like the intimacy of the new album," said Kris Kristofferson prior to the release.It feels like we are all at this time of life.[30]

The 57th annual BMI Country Awards were held on November 10, 2009.48 BMI Country and Pop Awards have been won by Kristopher's writing.He said, "The great thing about being a writer is that you can hear your baby interpreted by so many people that have creative talents that I don't have."Kristofferson has always denied having a good voice, and has said that as he's aged, what quality it might once have had.[33]

In December 2009, it was announced that Kristopher would be portraying Joe in the upcoming album Ghost Brothers of Darkland County, a collaboration between rock singer John Mellencamp and novelist Stephen King.[34]

On May 11, 2010, Light in the Attic Records released demos that were recorded by Kristopher.This is the first time these recordings have been released and includes material that would later be featured on other Kristofferson recordings and on the recordings of other prominent artists, such as the original recording of "Me and Bobby McGee".

The Maui Arts and Cultural Center hosted a solo acoustic show by Kris Kristofferson on June 4, 2011.

A new album of original songs was released by Kris Kristofferson.An Evening With Kris Kristofferson is a live album.

The character Chief Hanlon in the video game was voiced by Kristopher.

In an interview for Las Vegas magazine Q&A by Matt Kelemen on October 23, 2015, he revealed that a new album would include some old and new songs.The album was nominated for a grammy in December of 201636

"A Case of You", from the 1971 Mitchell album Blue, was performed by Kristofferson and Carlile at the Both Sides Now - Joni 75 A Birthday Celebration to celebrate the 75th birthday of Mitchell.[38]

On June 28, Barbra Streisand and Bryan Ferry were announced as supporting artists for a concert in London's Hyde Park on July 7, 2019.

He married his girlfriend, Fran Mavia Beer, in 1961.There was a brief relationship between Janis Joplin and Kristofferson before she died.His second marriage ended in divorce by 1980.The couple married in 1983.[39]
