You just got a new job at Kmart.If you've never used a cash register before, you will get the hang of it in no time.The most important functions for Kmart cashiers will be shown in this guide.
Step 1: You can log in to your account.
You can type in your clock number, slash, and secret number at the same time.Press OPERATOR.A receipt will be printed out when the cash drawer opens.The receipt should be saved.
Step 2: The register should be locked.
Press NO SALE to lock the register if you need to step away from it.It's important that you keep your register locked because everyone except you and your managers can't access it.
Step 3: You have to open your register.
Press OPERATOR if you want to type in your secret number.
Step 4: Close the register.
The OPERATOR was pressed twice in a row.A receipt will be printed out when the cash drawer opens.The receipt should be saved.
Step 5: There is a price check that needs to be done.
Press price check and then type the item's barcode.Press CLEAR when you are done.You can use rewards cards to do this.You can do this without being signed into your register.
Step 6: You can open your cash drawer without a sale.
Press no sale, then enter.When you're done, close the drawer and lock the register.
Step 7: Ask for the customer's phone number.
If the customer isn't a rewards member, offer to enroll them or skip this step.If the customer has a physical card or bar code on their phone, you can simply use the handheld scanning device.Touch Loyalty at the bottom of the screen if the customer uses their phone number or email address.Pick an account from the list if you type the phone number or email address.After selecting an account, a popup will appear telling the customer to use the PIN pad.The customer has to make a decision before the transaction can proceed.
Step 8: The customer's items should be Ringed up.
One by one, use the embedded or handheld scanning device.If you have to manually type in an item's barcode number, type the full number on the keypad and press ENTER.This works when you need a product scanned.Press DEPT if you can't find a UPC anywhere.#.At this point, your manager may have to enter his/her password.Press ENTER if you want to type the price of the product with no decimals.
Step 9: Fix any problem.
There are a lot of problems that can happen when ringing things up.To void/remove the last item you've rung up, press VOID, then enter.Press ENTER if you want to type the item's UPC number or Scan it again.If a customer tells you the price is wrong, void the item.Scan the item again, and then type in the correct price.Press enter.Pick the reason that you want to change the price.Your manager's password may be required to allow you to do this.If you need to take a percent off, the override process is slightly different.In this case, void the original item.You can type the percent that the item should be reduced.Press the % off key.Scan the item again.When it asks you to confirm the price, press ENTER.Pick the reason you want to change the price.Your manager's password may be required to allow you to do this.Press TOTAL if you have to cancel an entire transaction.The VT transaction limit check will be said by the register.Press clear.Your manager's password may be required to allow you to do this.
Step 10: The total key is used.
If your store is participating in a charity event, a popup will appear on the screen.Don't watch out!You cannot add or remove items from the list once you have scanned any coupons or selected any method of payment.
Step 11: If the customer has a coupon, you can Scan it on the screen.
If not, skip this step.Some coupons can't be combined, so be sure to use coupons in order of importance.Some coupons are not accepted.If the coupons are being scanned correctly, the register will say COUPON.You can put these coupons in your cash drawer.If the coupons are not scannable, type the value of the coupon and then press the store coupon, non-food coupon or food coupon.Select the product that the coupon applies to.You should always put accepted coupons in your cash drawer.When you're done ringing up the coupons, press TOTAL again.
Step 12: Touch the screen to make a payment.
The customer is using a credit card.
Step 13: Determine how the customer will be paying.
The list below shows the order in which different tender types must be accepted if the customer is using more than one method of payment.You may have to void the transaction if you do any of these in the wrong order.Be careful!Store issued gift cards, cash checks, and payment cards.
Step 14: Ask if the customer wants to redeem points.
skip this step if they don't.If they do, you can type in the amount they want to redeem and then press the SYW button twice to make it happen.The register will say "CUST must enter PRSL ID on PIN PAD" if you didn't use the scanner to ring up the customer's account.If they redeem less than ten dollars, press CLEAR and type the last four digits of your employee ID number, and then touch "OK".The customer must enter their personal ID on the PIN pad if they redeem more than ten dollars.
Step 15: If the customer is paying with a gift card, follow the steps.
skip this step if they are not.You can either touch the Gift Card button or press KMART CASH twice if they are.Swipe the card with the stripe facing you, right to left, above the keyboard.If the gift card doesn't cover the purchase, return it to the customer.Proceed with the next payment type if you throw it away.
Step 16: If the customer is paying in cash, follow these steps.
skip this step if they are not.To find out if they are, type the amount of cash they offer you.You can either press CASH TENDER twice or you can touch the Cash button.All bills should be marked with a counterfeit pen.One dollar bills are fake.The register will show the amount of change to be given to the customer when the drawer opens.
Step 17: If a customer is using a card, follow the steps.
skip this step if they are not.If they are, you can either press the EFTENDER twice or touch the button on the screen.The customer needs to input their information on the PIN pad.If the customer has a credit card, it's a good idea to Cancel on the PIN pad.Press CLEAR on your keypad if the customer tells you they made a mistake.Press the total and the payoff at the same time.If a customer wants to put a certain amount on one card and the remaining balance on another, they need to type the amount into the first card.You can run the second card if you choose to do so twice.If a customer is using a Canadian credit card in the U.S., the screen may prompt you to input more information from the customer's identification.
Step 18: If a customer pays with a check, follow these steps.
skip this step if they are not.Press CHECK TENDER twice if they are, or you can touch the Check button and then OK on the screen.You can choose the check type on the screen.The check should be put into the check reader with the "Endorse Here" side at the top.If the customer provided a blank check, press 1 and enter to print the total onto the check.Press 2 and enter if the customer filled out the checkout.Customers will be asked to provide driver's license information.Press ENTER if you want to type their license number.If you want to type the customer's date of birth on the keypad, do not use slashes or dashes.Then press enter.The customer has to sign the slip at the register.A second slip will be printed when the customer touches "Yes" on the screen.The signed slip should be put in the cash drawer.Wait for the register to process the check.A pop-up will appear on the screen once it has.Give the second slip and check back to the customer after you touch "OK".The screen may prompt you to put the check in the cash drawer instead of returning it to the customer.
Step 19: If any of the payment methods don't work, return the tender to the customer and ask for an alternate method of payment.
If they can't, call a manager to see if the transaction can be saved.You may have to void the entire transaction if not.
Step 20: One of two things can happen after the customer no longer owes money.
Some coupons may be printed on the receipt.The customer will be asked how they want their receipt to look.If the customer asks you to print, touch the "Print" button on the screen.
Step 21: Make sure to document any mistakes you made during the transaction.
OPERATOR needs to print a copy of the receipt from the most recent transaction.Write a note on the back of the receipt.If you valued a coupon at $5 instead of $3, write it down.You can put the receipt in the cash drawer.
Step 22: There is a "loyalty" button at the bottom of the screen.
Touch "Lookup/Enrollment".
Step 23: The customer's email address should be typed first.
If the customer is not already a member, a new screen will appear and they will have to confirm that their email address is spelled correctly.
Step 24: You can type the customer's phone number next.
It is the easiest way to look up a customer's account, so it is highly recommended.The customer will need to confirm that once you're done.
Step 25: The customer's first name, last name and ZIP code should be typed.
Touch the "Cardless" button.If the customer is also a Kmart employee, touch "Non-Associate" to change it to "Associate".
Step 26: If the customer is signing up without buying anything, touch "Enroll Without Sale" if they are doing so as part of a sale.
Step 27: The customer will need to create a personal ID.
Tell them that if they want to redeem more than ten dollars off their account at a time, they will need to type it in twice.
Step 28: The screen should close if it goes well.
The phone number or email address could be invalid if an error message appears.
