Jasper Engines has a Ford 5R110W TorqShift 5-Speed Automatic transmission.
The TorqShift is a five-speed, rear-wheel-drive unit that has six forward speeds with ratios depending on whether the transmission is operating in hot or cold mode. The 1st gear ratio was changed. The ratio of 2.20 is provided by the overdrive clutch. The 4R 100 has the same ratio as the 3rd gear. All sound familiar? The transmission will shift from 4th to 6th gear in cold mode if the overdrive clutch is engaged in 3rd gear. The transmission will shift 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5th and 6th in hot mode.
The new Ford 5R110W is a redesign of the 4R 100 and is referred to by Ford Motor Co. as the "TorqShift" transmission. In 2003 there was a 6.0L diesel engine in the F-Series trucks and Excursions.

The 2003 Super Duty vehicle that we tested was thought to have improved shift performance over the 4R 100 transmission.Every shift was very positive and there were no lags between them. The control valve body has been redesign. The function of each clutch pack, except for the forward clutch, is controlled by a pressure switch and a manual valve. There is only one shuttle valve in the body.
All shifts are controlled by five solenoids.Line pressure and the clutch have their own solenoids. The pressure output of the four solenoids is proportional to the applied DC current. The maximum pressure in the oil circuit is determined by the difference between 0 and 1 Amp from the PCM.The pressure output of the three solenoids is proportional to the applied DC current. The maximum pressure in the oil circuit can be found between 0 and 1 Amp.
A transmission temperature gauge has been added to the instrument cluster. The tow/haul mode on this unit is designed to assist the driver when towing a trailer or heavy load. When using the tow/haul feature, the transmission gear ranges are available.
The new transmission also uses a new fluid called Mercon® SP, which is not compatible with other fluids. The fluid and bottom-pan filters should be replaced every 48,000 km regardless of normal or special operating conditions.
The transmission has a new remote fluid filter.10% of the fluid is passed through a small orifice into a screw-on filter element.Through the large opening in the remote-filter manifold, the fluid is directed back into the rear lube circuit. The cooler lines should have the remote filter replaced. This unit has an oil-to-air cooler in front of it.Replacing the OTA cooler is recommended by Ford.Do not try to clean the cooler.
There are seven range positions that can be selected with the manual shift lever. There is a description of each range.
The adaptive strategy for the "Engagement Schedule" must be updated if the battery is disconnected for any reason.
The customer can't return with complaints of firm or harsh engagement.
The engagement pressures must be adjusted correctly with the new calibration.
There is a description of each of the sensors used by the PCM.
The operation of the transmission is controlled by the PCM.The information from the input sensors is used to control the actuators that determine the operation of the transmission.
When the temperature changes, the thermistor's resistance changes. As engine temperature decreases, the resistance of the sensor increases. This information is used to help determine the TCC operation.
The resistance of this sensor changes with temperature. As the air intake temperature increases, the resistance decreases. The air-temperature information provided by the IAT is used to help determine transmission line pressure and shift scheduling.
The sensor is mounted on the pedal. The APP sensor is used to detect the position of the pedal.APP-sensor information can be used to determine line pressure, shift scheduling and TCC operation.
The transmission will operate at a higher-than-normal line pressure if the APP sensor fails. This will result in upshifts and engagements.
The brake pedal is indicated by the battery voltage supplied by this switch. If the vehicle is so equipped, the PCM uses this information to release the Torque-converter clutch, speed control and auxiliary idling.
There is a momentary-contact switch on the end of the manual shift lever.A change in shift and TCC scheduling can be caused by it.The indicator lamp at the end of the manual shift lever will illuminate when the tow/haul switch is pressed.
The indicator lamp at the end of the manual shift lever will illuminate when the tow/haul switch is on.The transmission control indicator lamp is turned off when the switch is pressed again. The TCIL is under the control of the PCM.The TCIL may be flashed on and off by the PCM to alert the driver that a transmission operational error has occurred.
A ground signal is sent to the instrument cluster when the vehicle is in 4X4 Low.The transmission shift schedule is adjusted according to the instrument cluster's 4X4 Low status. At any vehicle speed up to 55 mph, four-wheel "High" can be selected.
The valve body is bolted to the transmission case inside the bottom pan and appears to be the same as the solenoid body.It has the following:
There is a manual valve that controls the function of each clutch pack, except for the forward clutch. The only valves in the body are the pressure-relief ball and spring.
The different-design solenoids are retained with a large "E" clip because they are different in design. The wires connect to the solenoids. The pressure switches have a black connection. There are two different types of wires for the TR-P sensor. The line-pressure solenoid is the only one that can be serviced without removing the body from the case.
The PC-A is a three-port solenoid. The applied DC current is proportional to the pressure output. The maximum pressure in the oil circuit can be found between 0 and 1 Amp.The PC-A is used to control the oil circuits.
The tcc is a three-port solenoid. The pressure output is proportional to the applied DC current. The maximum pressure in the oil circuit is determined by the current between 0 and 1 Amp.The apply and release rates of the clutch are controlled by the TCC.
The overdrive, intermediate, and low/reverse clutches are controlled by a three-port solenoid. The pressure output is proportional to the applied DC current. The maximum pressure in the particular clutch oil circuit is determined by the current and the PCM.The apply and release rates of the clutch pack are controlled by the shift solenoid.
The coast and direct clutch packs are controlled by a three-port solenoid. The applied DC current is proportional to the pressure output. The maximum pressure in the particular clutch oil circuit is determined by the difference between 0 Amp and 1 Amp from the PCM.The apply and release rates of the clutch pack are controlled by the shift solenoid.
The pressure switch on each of the five shift-pressure control solenoids is normally closed. The pressure switch is designed to open when the control pressure is high. The pressure switches are the same and can be interchanged in the body.Their functions follow:
Hall-effect sensors require a 12-volt power supply and a ground. There are two sensors in this unit. Two of the three terminals at the sensor are used to send signals to the PCM.The coast-clutch input hub and the adjacent overdrive ring-gear teeth are detected by the sensor. Each sensor reads 30 teeth per revolution. The sensors are mounted on the transmission case.Line pressure, shift timing and TCC operation are determined by the digital input from the TSS/ISS sensors.
The extension housing has a transmission output-shaft-speed sensor on it.The sensor is Hall-effect.The gear teeth on the park gear are different from the teeth used for park function. The OSS signal is used for vehicle-speed signal, shift scheduling and TCC operation. The OSS can use a digital output.
The sensor assembly is bolted to the transmission case and includes the detent spring, rooster-comb lever and brackets. The transmission-range sensor doesn't work on its own. Each of the seven manual shift lever positions has a fixed Frequency provided by the TR-P sensor. The TR-P sensor signal is used for starting in Park and Neutral only, reverse-lamp operation, and for line-pressure control.
The thermistor is a temperature-sensitive device that the TFT sensor twist-locks into. The resistance to fluid temperature decreases as it increases.Cold- and hot- temperature shift scheduling and TCC apply and release scheduling can be determined using the TFT signal as an input.
