Is now a good time to plant apple trees?
While late fall and early spring are the best times to plant, they are not the best times to order apple trees. Fruit trees are produced on an annual cycle and harvested in late fall. This means the best time to order is over the summer, even if you won't be planting the trees until the following spring.
Where is the best place to plant an apple tree?
Plant in an area with good air circulation so leaves dry quickly after a rainfall or watering to avoid leaf and fungal disease. Do not plant the tree in a low lying area where cold air settles, and avoid wooded areas with other trees. Ideal soil pH is 6.0 to 6.5 but a pH range of 5.5 to 7.0 will work.
Do you need to plant 2 apple trees to get fruit?
Apples are pollinated by insects, with bees and flies transferring pollen from flowers of one apple tree to those of another. But you don't need to plant a whole orchard to enjoy apples right off the tree. Two trees will reward any family with enough fruit to enjoy and share with friends.
