Is Spencer leaving Criminal Minds this season?
Matthew Gray Gubler is a fictional character on the CBS crime drama Criminal Minds. The genius with an IQ of 187 is able to read 20,000 words per minute. He is the youngest member of the FBI Behavioral Analysis Unit, has three BAs and three PhDs, and specializes in statistics and geographic profiling.
Spencer was born on October 28, 1981 in Las Vegas to William and Diana, who were both professors of 15th century literature.Diana stopped taking her medication while she was pregnant with Spencer.Despite her condition, his mother has a very close relationship with him.
He is a genius. He can read 20,000 words per minute and has an IQ of 187.He holds degrees in psychology, sociology, and philosophy. He obtained his PhDs in chemistry, engineering, and mathematics from Caltech.[2]
Spencer was playing chess at a local park when Gary Michaels approached him.Diana wanted the family to move because she thought her son was in danger. The six-year-old neighbor of Spencer's was raped and murdered.Diana told Lou about the park incident.Diana witnessed him beat Michaels to death with a baseball bat.She got blood on her clothes when she approached him.William burned Diana's clothes in order to protect his wife. The police didn't look into the case because Michaels had a criminal history as a sexual predator. After years of having nightmares about the incident, he begins to believe his father was the killer.BAU agents helped him investigate. After undergoing therapy to get his memories back, he thought he saw his father burning his own clothes, not Diana's.Even though it is clear that Michaels is the more likely culprit, he continues to pursue his father as a suspect. The body of Michaels is found and his murderer is arrested. His parents confess to their son the whole story while he is interviewing his father.[2]
William abandoned the family when they were 10 years old.The rift started after the Michaels incident, and as Diana's mental state deteriorated, William refused to take Spencer with him.He moved 10 miles away from his son.His father never changed jobs, as well as his father's address from 17 years ago.William said that he didn't return because he was too ashamed to go back, although he did keep an eye on his son.Spencer tried to convince his father to stay by saying that children of parents who remain together receive more education.William was angry: "We're not statistics."One way to get back at his father is to collect more educational degrees.[6]
Due to his young age and genius IQ, he was a victim of severe bullied in high school. He recounts in "Elephant's Memory" that he was stripped naked and tied to a goalpost in front of other students and when he got home, his mother was having another psychotic episode. In "L.D.S.K.A BAU agent is forced to kick a suspect in order to get a gun and shoot the suspect."You kick like a nine-year-old girl" is what he says when Hotchner says he is sorry if he hurt him. When he became the coach of his high school's basketball team, he used statistics to break down the opposing teams' shooting strategies, increasing his social standing as a child.[7]
At 12 years old, he graduated from high school. He rode his bike to classes at Caltech. He received his first doctorate after finishing his undergraduate degree. The episode writer admitted that the MIT line was a mistake, although it was never corrected. The "safety school" was Yale University.Between the ages of 17 and 21 he completed two more doctorates and two bachelor's degrees.
When he was 18, he realized that his mother's condition had gotten so bad that she couldn't take care of herself. He didn't want her to go to a mental institution.Diana still resides in the same institution, and as a result of the guilt he feels for not visiting her, he sends her letters every day.He told Morgan that he knows what it's like to be afraid of his own mind.10
In the District of Columbia, he resides in an apartment near a Metro stop.[13]
The middle name of the actor who plays Reid was never mentioned in the show.It was [13].
It is suggested by other people within and outside of the team, but it is never confirmed. He has a hard time dealing with his emotions and is socially awkward. He often fixes things and misses social cues. The first person to mention this is The Unknown Subject.
He doesn't use email or the iPad.Gubler said that Reid is germaphobic.Reid dislikes shaking hands and becomes uncomfortable when touched by strangers. There is a scene in " Out of the Light" where Morgan slightly moves an item in the home of an unsub afflicted with OCD, and Reid immediately places it back to its previous spot.
As seen in "L.D.S.K.", Reid is a poor shot with his service pistol. After failing his annual firearms qualification, he is relieved of his weapon and has to work without it during the team's newest case. After being held at gunpoint by the unsub, Phillip Dowd, Reid grabbed Hotchner's pistol and killed him with a shot to the head.He jokes to Hotchner that he had been aiming for the unsub's leg, and he returns the weapon and considers him to have qualified.
From season four onward, he began carrying a Smith & Wesson Model 65 as he was better off using a revolver.
The geographic profiling and map-related activities for the team are done by Reid because he is good at map reading. He is the team's go-to linguistic profiler, as well as their unofficial discourse analyst. One time when Morgan hands him the keys, he is rarely seen behind the wheel. He is seen getting into the driver's side of a vehicle in one scene, as well as driving to the BAU Unit Chief in "Lo-fi".He is usually seen as a backseat passenger in car scenes, and he uses the Metro to commute to work.
He joined the FBI at the age of 22.He did struggle with the more physical aspects of his job, and received waivers for those requirements, even though there was no psychological exam or test the FBI could put in front of him. After a year in the field, he still struggles to pass his qualifications. He is often left behind during arrests, has never given chase, and jokes that it is Morgan's job to kick down the doors. While he has shown an ability to physically disarm suspects, his true talent is psychologically disarming them, and this does not bother the team.
He was groomed specifically for the BAU, and Profiling is the only profession he ever considered. He was given the title of Supervisory Special Agent after graduating from the Academy.Brian Matloff, the "Blue Ridge Strangler", was his first case in the field.[23]
During the first two years of the team's existence, Gideon serves as a mentor to Reid. After a case went wrong, Gideon left the FBI.The chess player tries to understand the motives of the player.[ 24]
They are close to Jareau, Morgan, and Prentiss. One of the only two people on the team who calls him "Spence" is Jareau, who asked him to be a godfather to her newborn son.In "Plain Sight", it is implied that Reid has a crush on Jareau, and that he should ask her out after giving him football tickets for his birthday. They have a close, sibling-like relationship.Even if there was nothing he could have done to prevent her injury, he still blames himself. In "Closing Time", after she is injured while arresting a suspect, she tells the paramedic that she should get a CAT Scan, as she sits in the ambulance and counts her injuries. There is a brotherly friendship with Morgan. In season seven, he is comfortable enough to start a joke war with him, something that he probably wouldn't do with anyone else, and he occasionally confides his secrets to Morgan. In the episode "Elephant's Memory", when approached by a fully armed suspect named Owen Savage, who Reid identifies with, he gives Prentiss his gun and trusts her to back him up and not shoot at him as he tries to talk him down. When they return from cases, it is implied that Reid and Prentiss spend time together outside of work, along with riding the train home together.Prentiss is the only one who has beaten Reid at poker.A cult led by Benjamin Cyrus is holding two people hostage.Even though he is not hurt, Reid is still guilty of allowing Prentiss' beating at the hands of Cyrus in "Minimal Loss".The forensic linguistics class he guest lectures in is taught by Special Agent Alex Blake. She is a maternal figure within the BAU.
During an outbreak of anthrax in Maryland, Reid is shot in the leg to protect a doctor who is in danger. In reality, Gubler had injured his knee and the show's writers had written Reid getting shot to explain why he spent subsequent episodes with his leg in a cast and using crutches.)[21]
During "Corazon", he begins to suffer from headaches and hallucinating. There is no physical cause for his headaches and the doctor says they may be psychosomatic. He is afraid that he may be suffering from the same illness as his mother. It is not mentioned again until "Coda" is seen once again wearing sunglasses and carrying a book.In the same episode, a young boy is bonds with a man.The cut line from the episode states that Sammy and Reid are two of the most fascinating minds he has ever encountered. In the episode "Valhalla", Prentiss was told about his headaches. No one has been able to diagnose what is wrong with the man.He told Prentiss that he didn't tell any of the team members because he was afraid they would make him feel like a baby.[28]
The news that Prentiss faked her death in order to enter the Witness Protection Program is very upsetting to the two technical analysts who are unaware of it.He told Jareau that he "never got a chance to say goodbye" when he ran out of the room.In season seven, when Prentiss comes back, he is upset, especially with Jareau. He feels betrayed because he came to her house for 10 weeks in a row, crying over losing a friend, and not once did you tell him the truth. She doesn't say anything.[29]
In "True Genius", he wonders if he should be doing more with his knowledge, as he doubts his reasons for being in the BAU.The suspect sent him taunting messages and challenged him to find him.He revealed that the team missed his 30th birthday. The team throws him a birthday party at the end of the show.
In the second season of "Revelations", a psychotic serial killer drugged and tortured a man before he was rescued. He develops an addiction to Dilaudid because of his trauma. The BAU team members have suspicions about his addiction, but they don't confront him about it.An old friend of Reid's in New Orleans knows that he suffers from problems in "Jones".In "Elephant's Memory", they don't bring up the drug addiction until he gets clean and attends a support group meeting for addicts in law enforcement.
He admits to struggling with cravings as well as with traumatic memories, including a young adult suspect's shooting death in his presence. When he contracted "Amplification", he refused to take any narcotic painkillers in order to remain clean. He can empathise with other victims because of his torture under Hankel.
In (Season 7, Episode 2) "Proof", while arguing, Reid reveals to Jareau that he almost started taking Dilaudid again when Prentiss faked her death.
I thought about taking Dilaudid again.
One last time in the season 15 finale, when he suffers a seizure and sees George Foyet, who calls him an addict, he is mentioned as an addiction.
There is a lack of interest when interacting with women. The only exceptions are Austin, a barmaid he "woos" with magic tricks while showing her a sketch of a potential suspect, and Maeve, an actress he is assigned to protect. In the movie "Memoriam", a woman hits on a man in a Las Vegas casino, but he is oblivious to her intentions.
In "Somebody's Watching", with the team on a case to protect a TV star, Reid saves Lila from being harmed by a serial killer. The short-lived romance began when Reid was pulled into her pool for a kiss. They go their separate ways at the end of the episode.
Austin is investigating a serial killer who picks up his victims in bars.Morgan helps him out since he is spouting facts about club-related deaths.Austin, who works at the bar, performs a magic trick in which he appears to jab a pen through the eye of a police sketch, but pulls it through, leaving the paper unscathed. He gives her his business card if she hears something about the killer. She spills her drink on the woman and pulls her away when she sees the killer.Austin went outside to call Reid, but he grabbed her.The team saves her before she gets hurt.At the end of the show, he opened a package at his desk that contained the card that he gave her, with a kiss on the back.
In "God Complex", Maeve, whose face and identity he does not know, is called on a payphone and they talk about his progress with his headaches and sleep deprivation. She doesn't want anyone to know that she is in danger, and she does not want to be seen with him. While on a case in New Mexico, Reid was dropped off at a phone booth unaware that he was going to call the mystery woman. The man returns and questions his motives. He told her the mystery woman is a geneticist he contacted about his headaches during season six, whom he believes can help on the case. They were able to find the unsub and save his victim thanks to her.At the end of the episode, Reid thanks her for her help and tells her that he and the BAU can help her.She doesn't want him to hurt him.She told him that she loved him.He was left shocked and speechless when he started walking to his left. After "The Lesson",Reid continued to call Maeve, eventually getting to know her.She wants to meet her stalker because he might be gone.During a case in Arizona, he confronted him about a phone booth girl.He is afraid that she won't like him because of his looks, and he is nervous to meet her because he believes she is the most beautiful girl in the world. She encourages him to meet her. They are going to meet at a fancy restaurant until a man looks over at them.He thought he was Maeve's stalker and called her to cancel.Spencer realized that the man was not a stalker, and Maeve left. The hostess left a bag for him.It was the same book he was going to give her.She wrote a quote by Thomas Merton, "Love is our true destiny."We don't find the meaning of life by ourselves. We find it with someone else.
Maeve has been kidnapped by her stalker. He met Bobby Putnam, the man he believed to be Maeve's stalker, in the investigation. When she learns that her abductor is not Putnam, but her boyfriend, Diane Turner, she becomes more and more distressed.Even offers to take her place as he searches for her.Turner wants to be seen as an equal to him.Turner leads him to her location, where he tricks her into believing that he is in love with her. After meeting Maeve face-to-face, he was able to subdue Turner and then hold her at gun.Turner and Maeve are killed in one shot when he offers to take their place.
He is alone in his apartment for two weeks after Maeve's death. The BAU team tried to help him, but he wouldn't open the door. The team travels to another case while Reid is at home.He joins the team in person after they call him for help a few times. After the case is over, Morgan,Garcia, and Jareau will be asked to clean up his apartment. The Narrative of John Smith was given to him by Maeve and he put it on the bookshelf.
When he can't sleep because of a recurring dream in which Maeve asks him to dance with her, he throws himself into his work.By the end of "Alchemy", Reid is able to complete the dream by accepting Maeve's request to dance with her.He might have had kids if Maeve hadn't died.He has a copy of The Narrative of John Smith in his bag.
Cat Adams, a serial killer who made her debut in Season 11, quickly becomes enamored withReid, seeing him as her only "worthy opponent".She created an elaborate plan that ended with her son being arrested and his mother being kidnapped.Adams says she is pregnant with his child. When Adams is about to be executed in the next season of "Date Night", she wants to see him.She wants to go on a date instead of playing games.
In the Season 14 finale, she confessed that she has loved him ever since they first met.Despite her insistence that she only said it to the killer holding them hostage, she knows what she said is true, but she doesn't want to distract them from their friendship."
