Is it appropriate for 12 and 13 year olds.
It depends on the maturity level of those children. The themes of suicide, bullied, and exclusion are presented in a very intense way.The story is told from the point of view of high school students. There are sexual references in the language.
I would take my child.Have a talk about the language and suicide prevention.I wish all teens could see it.
You can see this without any reservations. The world is what it is now.All global young children and adults who use any form of social media should be required to see this play. This play should be taught in all schools.
I would give this show a rating of 13There are adult situations and themes that could make you uncomfortable as a parent, like suicide, but the foul language was the most uncomfortable part.I don't think our kids are as uncomfortable as we are about these shows.Even though I cringed in certain scenes, I took my daughter and she was fine.
I agree with B.B.A mature 13 or 12 year old would love the show. Some follow up discussions and conversations would help deal with some of the complex issues that I look through as a teacher. All kids can relate to what Evan is going through and the choices he has to make when he tells a lie.How do you get out of a situation that results in hurting other people, and what can you do about it?Some teachers have seen that show with their students.I've never heard of a teacher or parent who thought the show was inappropriate. As in all things, you know your child best and would have to think whether or not they would be able to handle some mature topics that are presented in the play.I would have taken my kids when they were younger.
The message of the play is applicable to all generations and the content is deep and poignant.Every child is different and every parent should assess their child's ability to process topics such as suicide, peer pressure, social anxiety, etc.It is a very emotionally deep show and they were able to create a balance between covering heavy topics while keeping the mood upbeat. The music is beautiful and the lyrics are easy to understand.
The presentation is not heavy.I would be more concerned about them understanding the story line and staying interested than about the suicide theme. It's just my opinion. The parts are quite comical.Good luck with your decision!
