Do Telecasters hum?
Telecasters with single-coils will pick up some hum anyway, but your problem sounds like a bad ground (or if you're in the UK, “earth”). First, eliminate things like the cord connecting the guitar to whatever it's plugged into. Try it with several different cords, and if the problem persists, it's not the cord.
