Hanging plants are a great addition to any room.Hanging planters can cost a lot.You don't need to buy one.You can make your own macrame plant hangers with a few dollars and rope. You can have your own plant hangers in a few minutes.
Step 1: At least 25 ft of thin rope or twine is required.
Each piece of rope needs to be 100 in (250 cm) or a little more than 8 ft (2.4 m) long for a standard planter.Get at least 25 ft of cotton rope. Most hardware and craft stores have rope for a few dollars, so it shouldn't be hard to find. You could use a different type of rope.Jute is a popular choice. If you want to be more decorative, look for colored rope. The rope needs to be thin for you to tie knots. It won't work for this project if it's too thick.
Step 2: Cut 3 sections of rope.
Measure out 100 in (250 cm) and then cut the rope. This will get you 3 equal pieces. You have plenty of room to work if you cut each strand a bit longer. When you are done, you can always trim away any excess. The original length of the rope is less than half as long. You can get a planter with 100 in (250 cm) of rope. You can change the rope length if you want.80 in (200 cm), for example, will give you a 40 in (100 cm) hanger, or a little over 3 ft (0.21 m).Depending on the look you're going for, you could use 4 strands or more. The process is the same.If you have more rope, you just have to tie a few more knots.
Step 3: Halfway through the carabiner, loop each rope.
Attach the rope through the opening in the carabiner.Pull the pieces together until you reach the halfway point. You have 6 strands if you fold the rope.If you use more rope, the number of strands will be different. If you don't have a carabiner, you could use a plain metal ring.
Step 4: Just below the carabiner, tie a knot with all the strands.
All 6 strands should be held in one hand.Pull the carabiner around them to make a knot.Make sure the strands are held together.Try to get this knot as close to the carabiner as possible. If you have to, try again.Make sure you loop all of the strands into a knot.Don't leave anything out.You could tie colored string below the carabiner to hold the strands together.
Step 5: Divide the strands into 3 groups.
It will be simpler to work on the hanger this way.Place the rope on the floor.Spread each strand out.Pair each strand with the one next to it, then group them into 3 pairs of 2.The 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th strands are the pairs for this project. If you use more rope, you will have more pairs. You'll have 4 pairs if you use 4 pieces instead of 3.While the planter is hanging, some people prefer to work on it.You can tie the rope after hanging it up by the carabiner.
Step 6: Attach the strands from the top knot.
Measure 18 in (46 cm) down from the top knot using a ruler or tape measure. To make a simple knot, take the first pair and loop them around each other. This can be done for the other 2 pairs of rope.Make sure the knots are at the same height. If you want to change the height of your planter, the knots are where it will rest.
Step 7: Below the knots, tie the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th strands.
Take your ruler or tape measure and measure 5 in (13 cm) down from the knots you just tied.Don't tie them together this time.Tie the 2nd and 3rd strands together. The 4th and 5th strands should be tied together as well. The tiered hanger has more support and decoration. The planter will sit in the middle of these knots. You can adjust the height of your hanger if you don't like it so far.
Step 8: The pieces of rope need to be joined together.
The first strand should be folded across the other strands to complete the pattern. These 2 should be tied together. The pattern will be different if you use more strands. You would tie the 1st and 8th strands together if there were four and eight strands.
Step 9: Make a final knot with all the strands below that pattern.
Hold all 6 strands with 6 in (15 cm) more down from the previous knots.Make a knot at the bottom of the hanger by looping them around each other.Make sure the knot is tight. The planter will fall if it is undone. You could add more to the decoration by using less space between the knots. If you make more than 1 hanger, you can try this.
Step 10: If you don't want the rope to hang, trim it at the bottom.
This is dependent on what you prefer. If you like the look of the rope at the bottom, then leave it.Cut it away with scissors if it isn't.You could wrap colored string around the rope to make a pattern.
Step 11: Attach a nail or hook to the wall where you want to hang the planter.
You can mount your hanger with either of these. You need to locate the spot where you want to hang the planter.Attach a hook to the wall where you want to mount the hanger. If you want to mount the planter like this, you could put a hook into the ceiling.
Step 12: To hang it, put the carabiner over the nail or hook.
Hanging the plant is easy once the hook is mounted.Start by looping the carabiner over the nail or hook. The planter needs to be secured before it can be put in.If you want to make sure the hook doesn't come loose, you can test it with a light tug.
Step 13: The planter needs to be placed inside the hanger.
You can mount the planter if you know the hanger is secure.Pick up the planter and place it on the bottom knot.Wrap the planter around the strands and hold it in place. To make sure the planter doesn't fall out, hold onto it and let it go slowly.
