How To Witness

It can seem difficult to share your faith with others. It is possible that you will be judged for your beliefs by the person you are talking to.The Bible says that if you're a follower of Jesus, you should baptize them in the name of the Father and the Son.

Step 1: Discuss surface-level subjects with the person first.

If you start talking to a stranger about their soul, there's a chance they'll move away from you.If you approach a family member or a close friend and start talking about your faith, they might be hesitant.Have a normal conversation with the person. If you're talking to someone you don't know very well, talk about their hobbies, family, or career. If you're spending time with someone who's close to you, try to get to know them a bit more by asking about things they've been up to in the past. Some conversations will never go farther than this.Continue to pray that God will give you the courage to be a witness for Him, and that he will help you look for signs that a person would be open to a spiritual conversation.

Step 2: There are clues that the person may be looking for.

Jesus' message of hope, love, and forgiveness is very powerful for someone who is struggling to find their place in life.If you're talking to someone who is sad, anxious, or fearful, even if they are cheerful on the surface, they might be willing to listen to God's word.A friend might say, "I don't know what I'm going to do with my life."The message that God has a plan for their life might give them hope, as my career didn't work out like I thought it would, and my relationships have all been disasters. You could hear someone say, "I feel worried all the time and I don't know why." In that case, the person might be open to God's message of hope and peace.Comments about what happens after people die, feeling a lack of connection to the world around them, or who created nature or mankind are just some of the things that could lead to a discussion of God.

Step 3: Be aware of the person's needs.

If someone is opening up to you in a vulnerable and candid way, and you quote Scripture as a blanket answer to their struggles, it can seem offensive.Try to talk to the individual in a way that allows them to feel God's love through you. That will be more effective than saying the Bible says God loves you.If a friend or loved one is depressed, you should call for help.If they're out of danger, you may be able to share your faith as a way to help them heal their inner pain, but it's important to have professionals help someone in crisis. If you live in the US, you can call the National Suicide Prevention Hotline. You can find a list of international suicide hotlines at www.ibpf.org.

Step 4: Introduce the subject of your faith with your conversation.

Depending on what you and the other person are talking about, the exact way you'll do this will be different. As you move forward, try to let the conversation develop organically and pray for guidance, wisdom, and sensitivity. You could say something like, "I really believe that God has a plan for your life, in the case of the friend who's concerned about their career and failed dating attempts."If you're talking to a friend who's always worried, you might say, "My relationship with God has really helped me handle all the stress in my life."Sometimes I get overwhelmed, but praying gives me a lot of peace. Is it okay for me to share my story with you?

Step 5: Stay respectful of the other person.

Remember to treat the other person with respect while you share Jesus' story.Don't discount their opinions, belittle their beliefs, or talk down to them. While remaining firm in your faith, open yourself to learning from their struggles and experience. It's up to God to show the person which of their behaviors are bad.You can point out that they have likely committed a sin or two throughout their lives, but don't judge the person or criticize the way they live.

Step 6: If the person seems aggressive, stop.

Some people are likely to be closed off from God's message. They may have had bad experiences with religious people in the past, or they may just have a bad view of the church.Change the subject if you sense that the person is hostile to you. You're more likely to leave the person with a good impression if you handle the situation with grace and kindness, instead of trying to force them to listen to what you have to say.If the person seems receptive to your message, or if they have a neutral response, you can move forward with sharing your witness.

Step 7: Share your faith in a warm way.

Although a frank discussion of sin can be very uncomfortable, God's message of forgiveness is a beautiful story. To keep the focus on the story of redemption and sacrifice, try to channel God's love for the person as you're talking to them. You might say, "I believe that God sent Jesus to earth and Jesus died on the cross to save us from our sins."I get a lot of peace from my relationship with God, and I would love to share that with you.Sharing your story of how you were saved can be very effective, rather than just explaining the message in an abstract way.The person might not know what in-depth theological terms are.Simple, everyday language is what you should use.Try to observe with humility, patience, and kindness.

Step 8: If the person would like to accept Jesus as their salvation, offer to pray with them.

It's up to the Holy Spirit and the person to decide if they will accept the story of Jesus. You can lead them in a simple prayer if they want to follow Jesus.Don't take it personally if they say no, as your intention is just to be a vessel for God to work through.Ask them to say something like, "Dear Lord, I know I am not perfect," if they want to pray.I want to have a relationship with God and turn my life over to him. Please forgive me for my sins and thank you for loving me.After the person prays, encourage them to attend a church where they feel comfortable.

Step 9: Try to live in a way that is Christ-like.

If you want to be a good witness for Christ, you should try to embody his teachings as much as you can, because no one can be perfect all the time.Don't lie, cheat, or jealousy. If you get a chance to witness someone else's behavior, it won't conflict with your message. Some of the most obvious qualities of a relationship with God show from deep within, not just in your actions. The Bible says that the fruit of the spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.Christ taught that you should forgive those who have hurt you.

Step 10: Don't forget to study your scriptures and pray.

It is the best way to have a strong relationship with God if you read your Bible every day and pray constantly. You can read the Bible from start to finish, read guided devotionals, or just open the book and start reading. No matter what approach you take, please pray that God will give you the words you need to share His message, and that he will guide you as you do so.Pray for opportunities to share God's word with receptive hearts and read the Bible. If you memorize the Bible and read it, you will be able to answer questions from a biblical perspective, which will help you have more confidence when you're witnessing."If anyone asks you to give a reason for the hope that you have, be prepared to answer them," says Peter.

Step 11: The Bible calls for you to share your faith.

It can be awkward to talk about spiritual beliefs with other people. You might not feel confident enough to be a good witness, or you might be afraid of losing a friend. You might be afraid that you will be punished for your faith in some places.Your goal is to invite this person to a relationship with Jesus so that they can go to Heaven.According to the Bible, a relationship with Jesus is the only way to live in heaven.Jesus said in John 14:6 that he was the way, the truth, and the life.Everyone comes to the Father through me.Jesus told his followers to tell others about him.The last words Jesus said before he ascended were, "You shall be witnesses to me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria and to the end of the earth."In Matthew 28:19-20, Jesus said: "Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son, and teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you."
