How to use a concrete backer rod to caulk.
A backer rod is used to fill a wide gap between surfaces. You can use a backer rod to help bridge the gap.Depending on the installation site, there are two types of backer rods that can be used. Most types of caulking are easy to apply and can be used to seal the bridged gap.
To get the caulking material to adhere, you need to clean all the surfaces. To remove dirt, oil and grease from the caulk beds, use a cloth and detergent.
Remove old caulk. To loosen it, apply it directly to the sealant. To remove old caulk, use a knife and a damp cloth.
Allow the cleaned areas to dry.Push the backer rod down below the level of the joint. For gaps of less than 1/2 inch that require water resistance, use a close-cell backer rod.Gaps of more than 1/2 inch are covered by an open-cell backer rod.Only indoor applications should you use an open-cell backer.
The caulk tube needs to be put into the caulking gun.The caulk tube can be secured with the help of the plunger.
The open edge of the caulk tube nozzle should be facing down if you cut the point at a 45 degree angle. The caulking gun nozzle should be positioned at the furthest end of the backer rod.
The caulk must be pulled to release it.Run a line of caulk between the facing material and the rod after drawing the nozzle back towards you.Just before you reach the end of the joint, release the gun and twist it to cut the caulk.
