As your tomato plants grow, their weak stems will fall over and sit in the dirt. This will make your plants vulnerable to disease and will increase your chances of stepping on them.Farmers tie their plants to stakes to increase plant height, increase yield, and keep their rows clear for people or machinery.
Step 1: With two plants between each stake, carefully hammer your stakes into the ground.
The stakes should be straight and vertical, in line with the plants. The stakes need to be at least 6” in the ground. The stakes should not move.
Step 2: Extra reinforcement can be found by hammering two stakes together at the ends of rows.
Step 3: The string should be tied to the stake at the end of the row.
Step 4: Carefully place the string in front of the first plant and behind the second plant.
Step 5: If you want to loop the string around the next stake, pull it tight.
Step 6: Proceed to the next set of plants, repeating steps 4 and 5.
When you reach the end of the row, you can loop the string around the stake twice and go back down the other side. The two strings should cross each other. The plants will be broken if you pull this side too tight.
Step 7: Cut your twine after you return to the starting end.
