If you want to stay organized, sew your own pouch to hold everything from toys to makeup. You can choose a fabric for the outside of the pouch or the lining. The pouch size should be based on the size of the zip. You'll be sewing a simple pouch in no time with a few basic sewing machine skills.
Step 1: There are 2 types of fabric to choose from.
Any type of fabric can be used for the outside of the pouch.Pick a pattern for the lining of the pouch. You'll need a pouch that's as long as you want it to be.You can purchase fabric online or in local craft supply stores. The amount of fabric you need depends on the size of your pouch.
Step 2: Take the length of the pouch.
Measure the total length of the zipper you've chosen. The fabric should be on the ends of the pull. The total length is the length of your pouch. If you measure the ends of the fabric, it will be 10 2 inches (26 cm) long.10 2 is the length of the fabrics for your pouch.
Step 3: The pouch should be as wide as you want.
Measure the width of the fabric to be 2 to 3 inches for a narrow pouch that might hold pencils.Measure the fabric to be around 6 2 inches (17 cm) if you want a wide pouch.
Step 4: To cut 4 equal-size pieces of fabric, use fabric shears.
If you know how long and wide you want the pouch to be, you can cut two pieces of fabric for the lining. The pieces should be the same size.To make a standard size pouch, cut each piece of fabric into a triangle.
Step 5: There is a lining piece.
The design should be facing up if you arrange 1 of the lining pieces on the work surface. The piece needs to be put across the top of it's body.It should be facing up as well.If you want the edges of the lining fabric to match, make sure that the top and ends of a zipper line up with the raw edge.
Step 6: The outer fabric piece should be clipped onto the lining piece.
Place one of the outer fabric pieces over the lining piece that you just lined up.Ensure that the outer fabric piece is facing up and that it lines up perfectly with the lining piece.
Step 7: Attach the foot to the machine.
Click the foot to place it.If you use a sewing machine, you may need to clip it slightly to the right or left. The material on the foot won't get in the way of your sewing.
Step 8: There is a straight stitch near the pull.
If you want to start stitching after the zip up, you should start at the very edge.Attach a straight line to the end of the fabric. Then cut the thread with 2 backstitches. You'll be able to stitch an even line if you start after the zipper pull. This is important if your pull is large. If your pull is small, you don't need to stop and sew.
Step 9: Straight stitch the rest of the line.
You can go back and finish stitching the line. You should sew from the end to where you started. The outer piece of the fabric should be visible when you open it.
Step 10: Place the piece of fabric on the lining.
Place the other fabric lining piece on the work surface. The piece of fabric you sewed on top of the lining should face up.The lining pieces are on top of each other.
Step 11: There is a piece of fabric on top.
The outer fabric should be facing down if you arrange it on top of your pouch pieces.Use fabric clips or pins to hold the pouch pieces in place. The lining piece of fabric on the bottom should be lined up with the outer piece on top.
Step 12: You can sew from the end of the pouch.
You can make 2 backstitches with your machine at the fabric edge.Stop about 2 inch (1.3 cm) before you reach the zipper pull. Before you finish stitching the line, stop and open the zipper.Straight stitching is possible if your pull is small and doesn't bulge out to the side.
Step 13: Iron the fabric layers on low heat.
You should lay the fabric on the work surface to make the layers open. The center of the zipper should be facing up.The outer layers of fabric are facing up on both sides of the zip up.Run your iron over the fabric to smooth it.
Step 14: Topstitch on both sides of the zipper.
To sew a straight stitch along the top of the pouch, use the presser foot of your sewing machine. You should be touching the fabric. This will give the pouch a professional look.If you want to personalize the top stitch, consider using a different color of thread. These can make the topstitch stand out.
Step 15: You can open the pouch like a book.
The 2 outer pieces of fabric need to be brought together.Lift these up with one hand and use the other to grasp the lining pieces. The outer pieces of the pouch should be on one side and the lining pieces on the other side.If you don't open and close the zipper now, you will not be able to sew the pouch after you finish.
Step 16: You can clip the ends of the pouch.
The teeth of the zipper should be facing the lining and not the outer fabric.Use small clips or pins to hold the ends of the zipper in place. The lining can be pinched or puckered if the zipper teeth are not pointed toward it.
Step 17: Attach pins along the lining side of the pouch.
The lining pieces have pins in them.Attach small clips around the sides of the pouch. The pouch layers need to line up.The pins on the lining side remind you to leave a gap. This is the opening for the pouch. You will know to sew along the clip edges until you reach the other pin.
Step 18: From the first pin to the second pin is how to sew.
You can use the 2 inch seam allowance to sew from the first pin. Then turn the fabric by straight stitching until you reach the corner.Continue sewing until you reach the other corner. You have to sew along the sides and corners to get to the other pin.You have an opening for the pouch if you leave the gap between the 2 pins.
Step 19: Cut the corners and trim the ends.
Don't cut into the stitching with fabric shears.Remove the tiny triangular pieces of fabric after you clipped each corner.Don't cut into the stitching if you trim off the bulky ends. The zipper will lie flat if the ends are trimmed.
Step 20: Pull the pouch out with your hand.
Put your hand through the gap that you left in the lining.Pull the outer fabric through the gap with your hand. The pouch is inside the fabric. To get the edges of the pouch sharp, push your fingers into the corners. This will make it easier to sew the pouch shut.
Step 21: There is a gap in the lining.
Tuck the open fabric under if you can find the gap in the lining.Hold it in place and sew it shut with a straight stitch. You don't need to sew until the opening is closed.
Step 22: Zip the pouch up after pushing the lining into it.
Push the lining into the pouch with the thread. The lining should be pushed into the corners. Then close the pouch.Your pouch is ready to use.
