Smoking cigarettes can be relaxing. Some people like to have one socially from time to time over drinks while others can't go an hour without a cigarette. If you are considering starting to smoke, be aware of the many health risks outlined in the Warnings section below before making a decision.
Step 1: Purchase a pack of cigarettes.
In order to purchase a pack of cigarettes in the United States, you must be at least 21 years old, since the federal minimum age was raised to 21 in 2019.When buying a pack, you should have a government-issued ID.Pick which kind of cigarettes you want. The two most popular types of cigarettes are clove cigarettes and mentholated cigarettes. You can find a wide variety of cigarettes in specialty shops. The amount of nicotine and tar delivered to the lungs can be reduced by a filter in a cigarette. If you're new to smoking, you shouldn't start on them as they might make your throat burn. Some cigarettes are more harmful to health than others. The cigarettes are called light and ultra-light.Some people think that they are safer than regular cigarettes. The taste of cigarettes will be different between full flavor, light, and ultra-light.If you are new to smoking, you might start on ultra-lights and work your way up to a full flavor.
Step 2: You should pack your cigarettes.
The tobacco in each cigarette is reduced in size by packing it.If you have trouble inhaling without coughing, you may skip this step. The opening from which you take the cigarettes is facing downward if you turn the pack upside down. You should extend your hand up.Rap the top of the pack down on the palm of your hand. The pack should be turned upside down by 180 degrees.Make sure the cigarettes are packed equally on both sides of the box.
Step 3: You can open the pack.
Cigarettes come with a plastic cover that has a small pull tab around where the lid flips open. The tab needs to be pulled to break the seal. The cigarettes have foil on them. Both foil tabs pull away in the boxes for some brands, such as Camels, and in other brands only the front tab pulls away.
Step 4: You should flip your lucky.
Many smokers designate a single cigarette as their "lucky" cigarette by flipping it in the box upside down. They smoke the last cigarette in the pack.People who flip a lucky coin always choose the same cigarette position, for example, the second cigarette from the left in the back row.Although the cigarette is called a "lucky", it's an excuse to not give away your last cigarette to friends who are trying to smoke.Say "sorry, this one's my luck."
Step 5: The cigarette is pointing back at you.
You can experiment with different ways to hold a cigarette until you find a style that works for you.The most common way to hold a cigarette is between your fingers. The first knuckle on each finger is where the filter should be.Many people hold a cigarette between their thumb and forefinger and think it's a pencil. The pads of your fingers should be the location of the filter.
Step 6: To light a cigarette, use matches or a lighter.
While inhaling, put a flame between your lips and the exposed end of the cigarette. The flame should be touching the exposed end of the cigarette to make sure it has been lit.Make sure the entire end of the cigarette is lit by looking down at the lit end.Continue if one corner remains unlit.Make a shelter with your hand around the cigarette if the wind blows out your flame. If you can't block the wind with your hand, turn so that your back is to it.Keep your hand around the flame while blocking the wind with your head.People with long hair need to be careful because the wind can blow their hair into the flame. If you are a new smoker, start with a lighter that has a stable flame. If you take too long, matches will burn your hands.
Step 7: Inhale and exhale.
If you want to avoid burning coughing fits, you should first take shallow inhalations. You will be able to take deeper drags as you get used to smoking. You shouldn't be holding the smoke in your mouth. If you're feeling fancy, exhale through your mouth. If you try to exhale through your nose, you know if you're drawing the breath into your lungs or mouth. If there is no smoke coming out of your nose, you are holding the smoke in your mouth.Don't hold the smoke in your lungs for too long. The process is supposed to be enjoyable.Don't let the fire touch the filter if you smoke all the way down to it.It stinks and tastes terrible.
Step 8: It's a good idea to ash your cigarette.
The cigarette will turn to ash as it burns down. You can jar the ash from the end of the cigarette with your index finger and place it in an ashtray. If you don't remember to ash from time to time, the ash can fall on your clothes or food. The end of the cigarette can be tapped against an object to remove the ash.Cigarette ashes can accumulate on your clothes.Put your cigarette out.You should extinguish the flame from the cigarette when you've finished smoking. In parts of the world that are dryer, fires can be started by lit cigarettes that have been mishandled. There are a number of ways to put out a cigarette.Stubbing out a cigarette means pressing it into a flat surface. You can put it into the ashtray and it will stop glowing.Drop it to the ground and grind the flame out with your shoe. This will cause a black charred mark on the ground.Pick up a cigarette and throw it away.If you don't want to create a large black smudge by grinding the cigarette out with your shoe, you can pop the cherry. This means to flick the cigarette until the flaming part at its tip falls out.You can grind the cherry out with less effort. The cigarette should be thrown in the trash.
Step 9: Purchase a cigar.
You must be at least 21 years old to purchase cigars in the United States, so bring your identification with you.Do your research before buying a cigar, there are many different types. The majority of cigars are from South America. They're between 42 and 45 in diameter and have a ring gauge between 1/64th of an inch.Panatela cigars are more popular with women because of their feminine shape. The ring gauge of the cigars is 42 to 47.They're a good cigar for beginners. The Julie tas cigars have a length of 7 inches and a ring gauge of 47.These are for smokers with more experience.Cuban cigars with a length of 5 inches and a ring gauge of 50 are known for their strength and flavor. The cigars come to a point at the end.The cigars take at least an hour to smoke, so should be enjoyed while relaxing. The shorter and wider a cigar is, the more intense it will be, so beginners should choose a longer, thinner variety to avoid coughing fits.
Step 10: The cigar needs to be consistent in packing.
To make sure there are no hard or soft spots, lightly squeeze the cigar all along its length. The cigar would be hard to smoke if the tobacco was unevenly packed.Check for any discolored objects.
Step 11: The cigar needs to be cut.
To keep the tobacco from drying out, cigars have a cap on the end that must be removed before you can smoke them.Place the tip of the cigar into the cutting hole if you have a cigar cutter.Cut it off with a swift chop.If you don't have a cigar cutter, use sharp scissors or a knife to remove the cap.Weak pressure or dull blades will squeeze down on the cigar and change it's shape. It will be more difficult to smoke because of this.Don't cut yourself while using any of the sharp-bladed tools.
Step 12: Before lighting the cigar, warm it.
Hold the end that will be lit over an open flame and rotating it to make sure that the heat is evenly applied to the cigar. It will be easier to light a cigar when it is warm.
Step 13: Light the cigar.
The flame should be held to the tip of the cigar.Draw the smoke into your mouth. Before we put our lighter away, make sure the cigar is fully lit.To make sure the cigar is fully lit, blow on the lit end.If there are any unlit spots, the air from your breath will make the lit parts glow brighter.
Step 14: Take a deep breath and exhale the cigar.
Unlike cigarettes, cigar smoke does not enter your lungs. You hold the smoke in your mouth for a few seconds to enjoy the taste. It takes an hour or more to smoke a cigar, so don't try to speed it up.To savor the experience, set aside a good portion of time.If you get distracted and don't smoke the cigar from time to time, you risk letting it go out. It's important to keep it lit by blowing every thirty seconds.
Step 15: Put out the cigar when you're done smoking.
If you put the cigar out in an ashtray or on the ground, it will leave a black smudge.Don't take it out if you want to save it later.A re-lit cigar will taste bad.The lit end can be cut off with a cigar cutter. When re-lit, the cigar will still have a burnt taste, but not as bad.
Step 16: Purchase a pipe and a tampering device.
Both of these products can be purchased online. The tobacco is put into a bowl.Make sure you like the way your pipe looks.Make sure you buy the product you want to use time and again by browsing through all the options at the tobacconist or online.A smooth smoking experience is ensured by choosing a pipe that has a smooth airway from the mouth into the hole. The flavor of the tobacco is affected by condensation caused by metal filters in the pipe.
Step 17: You should buy the right tobacco.
If you're not familiar with all your options, you might get overwhelmed trying to make a decision. The best thing you can do is ask a tobacconist for a recommendation, they'll be able to talk you through the process and match you with tobacco that suits your tastes.English and Scottish-style cake tobaccos tend to be spicy and full-flavor American tobacco is sometimes flavoured with sugars or syrups to change the taste.Cavendish is a tobacco that is cured.Asking a store employee for recommendations is similar to asking a sommelier for wine recommendations.
Step 18: Pack your pipe.
Place your tobacco in the bowl of the pipe until it is full, then use your tamper to pack it down, so that it doesn't fill the entire bowl.Once the bowl has been filled with tightly packed tobacco, repeat that process. It will be difficult to smoke the pipe if you pack it too tightly.Pressing down on the tobacco will make it springy.
Step 19: The pipe should be lit.
Use a match or lighter and hold the flame over the bowl.To evenly distribute the heat, move the flame over the bowl. After your initial lighting, gently press the tobacco again.
Step 20: Inhale and exhale.
Unlike cigars, pipe smoke is not meant to be breathed into the lungs but held in the mouth to enjoy the flavor.Make sure the tobacco was densely packed in the bowl by keeping it down from time to time.Put a pipe cleaner in your mouth for a few moments to dry out the passageway.Let your pipe cool down if it gets too hot.You can light the tobacco.
Step 21: Put the pipe out.
When you've finished smoking, you can either put out the smoke by pressing your tamper into the bowl until it is extinguished, or by simply letting the pipe sit unsmoked.
