If you like the look of cuffed trousers, you can sew them in place. It's a simple project that you can complete in an afternoon if you know how to use a sewing machine. You will be able to transform those long trousers into a pair of turn ups in no time.
Step 1: You should put on the pants and shoes you plan to wear.
This will help you get an accurate measurement.Make sure the pants sit on your waist in the way you wear them. The length of your cuffs might be off a little.
Step 2: Pin the material in place when you turn it up.
To make sure the length is even for both legs, fold the bottom of the pant leg up and look in the mirror. To hold the folded material in place, pop a couple of pins around the edge of each leg.It wouldn't hurt to measure from the crotch seam to the new length. You have backups.
Step 3: To remove the original hem, use a seam ripper.
Take the pants off and use the seam ripper to cut the thread. The material should hang loose if the hem is unfolded.Do the same thing for both legs.If you don't have a seam ripper, a razor blade works.
Step 4: To get rid of the old creases, iron the hems.
Place the first leg on the ironing board and press the material until the crease disappears.Do the same thing for the other leg.You have a fresh start to make cuffs. It can be difficult to get out of the old hem.You can use the steam function on your iron or clothes steamer.
Step 5: Lay the pant legs out flat.
The pants should be folded like you were hanging them up.You should put them in front of you with the waist end on your left and the hem on the right. You can smooth the material with your hand.If you want to make sure the pants are smooth, grab the waist with your left hand and legs with the right hand.
Step 6: You can iron a crease by folding the legs up to the length you measured earlier.
Take the ends of both legs and fold them at the pin you used to mark the length. To iron the length with a crease, take the pin out, make sure the material is flat, and iron along the fold.Since the legs are stacked, the iron will crease them.
Step 7: The legs have to be folded down to make a 2 in cuff.
The material goes beyond the first crease if the ends of the pants are turned down. There is a new fold above the first crease. You can use an iron to press the new crease into your pants. If you want, you can make your cuffs smaller. It's popular to have 1 2 in and 14 in.Since that can look unbalanced, don't create cuffs larger than 2 2 in.Excess material beyond the first crease should be trimmed down to 2 in (1.3 cm).
Step 8: To iron the ends, unfold the legs to the full length.
The legs have to be separated to make sure they don't crease. The material should be tucked inside the first leg so the end of the pants don't fall off.Do the same thing for the other leg.To press the material in place, run an iron along the end of each pant leg.The excess material is tucked inside each pant leg.
Step 9: Straight stitching is done from the inside of the pants.
Place the first leg under the needle so that you can use the thread on the inside of the leg.Straight stitch all the way around the pant leg.Do the same thing for the other leg.At a time, sew through one layer of material. If you have to sew on the inside of the legs, turn them out and do it that way.
Step 10: When you hit the row of stitches and iron again, fold the material up.
Your turn ups are taking shape. When you hit the new stitches, you won't be able to fold the material past this point.Press this new fold into place with your iron.Do the same thing for both legs. Before you iron each cuff, make sure the sides of the cuffs line up with the side seams on the legs.
Step 11: Stitch across both sides of the cuff.
The final seam stitches will hold the cuff in place. You just need to sew a straight stitch across the inner and outer side of the legs.Don't sew through the edge when you sew across the cuff.
Step 12: The cuffs should be pressed a final time to create a crisp edge.
The hard part is over.To press a clean, crisp edge into your pant legs, you just need to run your iron over both of your cuffs. The sharper the crease, the better the cuffs will look.
