Resetting the water heater will usually solve the problem if it stops producing warm water. The process is simple if you can locate the water heater and identify the reset button. All you have to do is open the heater, press the button, and close it.Most of the time, your water should be back to normal within a few hours. The problem may be related to a weak controller or an element that is shorting out.
Step 1: The electricity needs to be turned off.
It's never a good idea to tinker with a water heater that is still powered on.It's a good idea to turn off the electricity before you open the heater.A cable is plugged into a wall. You can shut off the electricity by turning a knob near the cable. You need to turn it off at the breaker box if your water heater is wired directly.
Step 2: The cover plates need to be removed.
There is a metal plate that is held in with screws near the bottom of the water heater. To remove the plate from the heater, use a screwdriver and your hands. The reset button can be found underneath the second cover plate on many water heaters. You can either use a flat head screwdriver or aPhillips screwdriver.
Step 3: The insulation pad needs to be removed.
A foam installation pad will be inside the heater. You need to access the buttons to reset the heater.Pull the pad out with your hands and put it away.It is possible that an element gasket is leaking, which will need to be fixed if there is any water on the pad or near the reset button.
Step 4: There is a reset button.
The control panel should have a red button. The reset button is sometimes labeled as this button.
Step 5: The button should be pressed firmly.
If you haven't reset the heaters in a while, the reset button can be sticky. To get the reset button to push, press down very firmly with your fingers.
Step 6: Wait to hear the click.
A click shows that the heater has been reset. If you hear a clicking noise, keep your finger against the button. If you don't hear a click when you press the button, you need to check the wiring for loose wire nuts. The controller probably needs to be replaced if the wiring is good. The heaters are different. When you press on the reset button, some heaters may not click. If you don't hear the click after pressing on the button, you should reassemble the heater. The hot water will probably be restored.
Step 7: The insulation pad needs to be put back in place.
Take the insulation pad that you removed. You can put it back in the heater by using your hands.
Step 8: Make sure the door is in place.
The door should be placed over the control panel.Put it back in place.
Step 9: The power should be turned back on.
To restore power, plug the cable back in or flip the switch.Within a few hours, your water should be flowing.
