You can play PS2 games if you have a PS3 model that is backwards compatible.Many popular games can be found on the PS Store if your PS3 isn't compatible with PS2 discs.Even if your model doesn't normally support it, you can use the mod to play any PS2 game.
Step 1: If your PS3 is fat, look at it.
The original PS3 design is referred to as the "fat" PS3.Some fat PS3s are backwards compatible, but not all of them.The "super slim" and "slim" models are not compatible with the past.There are 4 ports on the front.If you don't have a backwards compatible PS3 and you want to play PS2 games on it, you have to purchase and download games from the PS Store.The PS3 can be used to play PS2 games.If you do that, you will void your warranty and be banned from the network.
Step 2: Take a look at the number of ports on your PS3.
Not all fat PS3s are backwards compatible.The number of ports on the front of the PS3 is important to check if you have a fat PS3.It is backwards compatible if the PS3 has four ports.It can't play PS2 discs if it has two ports.
Step 3: There is a serial number.
The PS3 has a sticker on it.The last digits will tell you if you have full hardware backwards compatibility or limited software emulation.The models do not contain the Emotion Engine as they are emulated by the Cell processor.Some PS2 discs may have issues.These models are not compatible with the past.
Step 4: If your game is compatible, check it out.
Some PS2 games have known compatibility problems, so if you want to play them, you have to use a compatible PS3.This is more common if you have a model that uses partial software emulation instead of full hardware backwards compatibility.
Step 5: There is a PS2 disc in your PS3.
It will start like a PS3 game if your game is compatible.The game will begin if you see the logo.
Step 6: The controller can be activated with the PS button.
You'll be asked to insert a controller when the game starts.You can assign the controller to "Slot 1" by pressing the PS button on your controller.This will allow the game to recognize your controller.If you are using a third-party PS3 controller, you may not be able to play PS2 games.If you can't get it to work, try an official controller.
Step 7: You can create a PS2 virtual memory card.
The PS2 game will treat a virtual memory card as a physical card in order to save your games.You can use the PS3's XMB to do this.The XMB can be opened by pressing the PS button."Memory Card Utility" can be found in the game menu.Choose "Internal Memory Card (PS2)" if you want to add a new internal memory card.The Memory Card should be assigned to "Slot 1."The game will be able to use the new Memory Card.
Step 8: You can adjust the PS2 settings.
You can adjust the PS2 settings on your PS3 that are backwards compatible.If you want to improve the image quality of PS2 games, open the settings menu in the XMB and select "game settings."You can choose your settings.This will affect how the image is stretched to fit your screen.The game may be black bars if "Off" displays it in its original resolution.The resolution will be increased to match the screen size.You can stretch the image to fit your display.If the game doesn't look good upscaled, choose off.You can choose your settings.Smoothing will try to make your games easier to play.This will be more noticeable in games with 3D graphics.Smoothing may not be noticeable in the games you play, and may make things look worse.
Step 9: You can open the store.
You can do it from the PS3 or store.playstation.com.Even if it isn't backwards compatible, PS2 Classics can be played on any PS3 system.
Step 10: The games section of the store is open.
You can see different categories.
Step 11: "Classics" should be selected.
You might have to scroll down to find it.The "PS2 Games" option is only available for PS2 games compatible with the PS4.
Step 12: There is a "PS2 Classics" box.
Only PS2 Classics will be displayed.PS One Classics can be played on the PS3.
Step 13: You can add any games to your cart.
Depending on your region, the game selection will be different.Not all PS2 games are available.
Step 14: Purchase the game.
You can checkout once you've added items to your cart.You will need either a valid payment method or money in your wallet to redeem a gift card.You can add a credit card to the store to make a payment.
Step 15: You can download PS2 games.
You will be able to download the games once you've finished the purchase.You can start the downloads from the purchase confirmation page, or you can open your Downloads list and download them from there.
Step 16: Play the game.
The games section of the XMB has a list of your PS2 Classics.Start playing the game by selecting it.
Step 17: A PS2 virtual memory card can be created.
You need to create a virtual memory card to save your PS2 Classics games.You can use the PS3's XMB to do this.The XMB can be opened by pressing the PS button.From the game menu, choose "Memory Card Utility (PS/PS2)."Select "Internal Memory Card (PS2).""Slot 1" should be assigned to the Memory Card.You can save your game to the memory card if your PS2 Classics game is able to access it.
Step 18: There is a mod for your PS3.
You can use a jailbroken PS3 to play most PS2 games.The process is more complex and requires that your console be jailbroken or modified, which voids your warranty, and can get you banned from the PSN.If you can handle these risks, you should be able tojailbreak a PS3 if you want to.The most common game manager for jailbroken PS3s is multiman.This comes with a lot of custom packages.
Step 19: Attach the PS2 disc to your computer.
You won't be able to play the game from a disc on the PS3.Instead, you'll be creating an image file of the disc and then adding the PS2 Classics emulator wrapper to it, which will allow you to play it as a PS 2 Classic.The finished file will be transferred to the PS3 from your computer.
Step 20: The ISO can be created from the disc.
If you want to do it on Windows, you'll need to download and install the free, open-sourced disc scanning program.Click the "Read Disc" button if you want to create an ISO file from your disc.From the Utilities folder, open Disk Utility.Click the file menu and select "New"The image file can be created on your desktop.Once you have created the CDR file, open the Terminal and type "HDiUtil convert /Desktop/original.cdr -format UDTO -o"This will make the CDR file into an ISO file.
Step 21: You can copy your ISO files to your PS3.
You can do this using a computer.You can use multiman to place the files on your PS3.
Step 22: You need custom tools to run ISO files.
You will need to install two different packages on your PS3.The files that can't be linked here are: React PSN.pkg PS2 Classics Placeholder R3
Step 23: The files should be placed in the root directory of the drive.
Put the file on the drive.You need to extract PS2 Classics Placeholder R3 so that all the files are on the drive.All of these should be on the root of the drive.
Step 24: The PS3 has a right-most USB slot.
The slot is close to the drive.
Step 25: You have to install it from the drive.
Select the file you want to install on the drive.Don't run it yet, but you should see it in your game section after installing.
Step 26: PS2 Classics Placeholder R3 should be installed.
The same process is used to install PS2 Classics on the PS3.
Step 27: You can create a new account on the PS3.
The installation process requires this to continue.
Step 28: Go to the game menu.
Your "aa" account will be renamed to "reAct PSN v2.0 1rjf 0edatr" after a moment.
Step 29: You can log in with your regular account.
You don't need to use the new account, just log in with your usual account.
Step 30: Click the Retro section to launch multiman.

Step 31: The "PS2ISO" folder has been selected.
The ISO files that you copied to your PS3 will be listed here.
Step 32: Pick the game that you want to play.
It may take a while for multiman to process the ISO file and convert it into a game.The game title will be "PS2 Classics" after the conversion is finished.
Step 33: To load the game on your XMB, select the converted game.
After selecting it, you'll be taken to the XMB.
Step 34: The "PS2 Classics Placeholder" can be found in your game menu.
