Most prescription drugs are packaged in child-proof containers, which require a certain amount of dexterity and arm strength to open.It can be difficult to open child proof pill containers if you are an adult who is suffering from a loss of arm dexterity or strength due to injury or arthritis.
Step 1: The container should be placed on a flat surface.
This will give you a good grip on the container.
Step 2: To find out what type of child-proofing is on the container, check the label.
Push and turn down is a type that has an arrow pointing down or a label that says Push. The lid has grooves around it to help you squeeze and turn it easily. The lid will have a small raised tab that indicates a turning motion if you push down the tab.The lid has an arrow pointing downward and another arrow on the lip of the container pointing upward.
Step 3: Try to open it.
Because each child proof container has its own locking mechanism, it's important to use the right motions to open it.Ignore this step if you aren't mobile enough to open the lid on your own.Push the lid downward and it will open.Use the grooves around the lid to get a good grip on it, then squeeze and turn it at the same time until it opens. To open the lid, push down the tab and turn it.Line up the arrows by rotating the lid until the arrow is in line with the lip of the container.Lift the lid off the container.
Step 4: The table has a wide edge.
The wide edge will give the cap some leverage.
Step 5: The bottom part of the cap should be resting against the table.
You want the edge of the table to be between the top and the bottom.
Step 6: Pull the container against the edge of the table.
As you move against the edge, the cap should click and release. It is possible to place the cap underneath the edge of a table or kitchen counter.Hold the container in one hand and apply pressure until the cap clicks.
Step 7: The container should be turned over on a flat surface.
You can use a table or counter.
Step 8: The palm of your good hand should be on the base of the inverted container.
Light pressure should be applied to the base.
Step 9: Keep the lid motionless by rotating the container.
If you can, hold the lid with your other hand.
Step 10: Once the lid clicks or releases, stop rotating.
Hold the lid and container in your hand and turn them over. You should now be able to open the pill container.
Step 11: Purchase a bottle opener from a hardware store.
Good grip can be provided by one made of rubber that has non slip grooves.Individuals with limited arm mobility can use the Dycem bottle opener, as it only requires you to use your fingers or palm of your hand.A small rubber mat can be used in a pinch to help you open the container.
Step 12: The bottle opener can be put on the container.
If possible, hold the bottle in place with your other hand.If you have an extra rubber mat lying around, place it under the bottle so that you don't need to use your other hand to hold it in place.
Step 13: To change the bottle opener, use your hands or fingers.
You should be able to open the container with the strong grip of the opener.
