Sweatpants are comfortable. They are perfect for working out, relaxing at home, and running errand in the middle of the night. If it's too warm to wear sweatpants, you can try sweatshirts. You can either make them from an old pair of sweatpants or from scratch.
Step 1: Put a pair of sweatpants on the flat surface.
You will be cutting these sweatpants up, so make sure you don't change them permanently. The front of the pants should be facing you.
Step 2: Put a pair of shorts on top of each other.
If you want the sweatshirts to be long, you need to find a pair of shorts. They should be placed on top of the sweatpants. The front of the shorts should be facing you.If you don't down a pair of shorts, make a mark with a chalk or pen where you want them to end, then take them off.
Step 3: Use a chalk or pen to trace the bottom edge of the shorts.
Light and dark fabrics can be used with chalk and a pen.Use a ruler to make the line straight. If you want to hem the cuffs later, add 2 inch to them.If you don't have a pair of shorts, use a ruler to draw a straight line across one of the legs.Slightly angle the line towards the inseam.
Step 4: Cut the lines that you drew from the shorts.
Make sure you cut through both layers of the fabric with a sharp pair of scissors. If you plan on leaving the edges raw, cut above the line that you drew so that it doesn't show on the finished product.Cut off the leg you marked if you don't have a pair of shorts. If you want to cut the second leg off, you need to fold the pants in half.
Step 5: If you like a rugged look, leave the cut edges raw.
sweatpants material is the same as T-shirt material. You don't have to worry about the fabric unraveling because you can leave the cut edges raw.It might be a good idea to put fabric glue on the edges of the seams. The seams will not split.
Step 6: If you want a finished cuff, fold the cut edges inward.
The cut edges should be folded into the legs by 2 inch. The hem should be close to the cut edge.Use a thread color that matches your fabric. When sewing, be sure to backstitch and remove the excess thread. If you don't know how to sew, you can use fabric glue or iron-on hem tape.Follow the instructions on the label.
Step 7: The sweatpants fabric should be folded in half with the wrong sides facing out.
The fuzzy Sweatpant fabric is similar to T-shirt fabric on the right side. Most fabric shops have it.You should be folding along the grain. The knitting should run parallel to the fold.If you can't find sweatpant fabric, use jersey fabric.
Step 8: Put the shorts on top of the fabric by folding them in half.
Find a pair of shorts that are loose-fitting and fold them in half. They should be placed on top of the folded fabric. The elastic needs enough space at the top of the shorts. You should double the width of the elastic you use.The shorts should be from the top edge of the fabric. You have enough room to cut a second pair if you put the shorts in such a way.
Step 9: Cut around the shorts and leave a 2 in border.
Cut around the sides and bottom of the shorts. You shouldn't cut along the top edge. The side edges should be extended to the top edge of the fabric.Extra length is being added to the top edge. The shorts can be traced.Use a tailor's pen for light fabrics. If you don't want to hem the cuffs, do not add a 2 in seam allowance to the bottom of the shorts.
Step 10: Put the straight edges along the sides together.
Use a straight stitch, a matching thread color, and a 2 in seam allowance. When you're done sewing, backstitch.Do not sew the curved part of your shorts. For now, you are doing the inseam and outside seam.If you need to sew, use sewing pins to hold the fabric together. When you're done sewing, take them out.
Step 11: If you want, you can fold the cuff up by 2 inch and sew it down.
The pan leg should be rolled up by 2 inch.To the raw edge, sew as close as possible.Just like before, use a straight stitch and a matching thread color. When you're done sewing, backstitch and cut off the excess thread. The cuff needs to be folded on the outside of the pant leg.The inside will eventually have the raw edge.
Step 12: To make a second pant leg, repeat the process.
To trace the same shape on your folded fabric, use the shape you just finished sewing.Attach the straight side edges of the second shape. If you want, sew the cuff. You can either trim the side seams down to 4 inch (0.64 cm) or leave them as they are.
Step 13: Take 1 leg out and put it inside the other leg.
There is a fuzzy side of fabric on the outside of the tube. The smooth sides of the fabric are sandwiched inside the layers.
Step 14: The seat and crotch are curved.
Start sewing at the waist.Go up towards the other end of the curve.Just like before, use a straight stitch, 2 in seam allowance, and a matching thread color. You should backstitch when you finish sewing. If you have to, secure the curved part of the crotch and seat with sewing pins.
Step 15: Remove the legs and turn the shorts inside out.
Take the inside leg at the cuff from the tube. The leg should be pulled out so that you have a complete set of shorts. The wrong side of the fabric should be facing you.Turn the sorts inside if it isn't.
Step 16: According to your waist measurement, cut a piece of wide elastic.
Wrap a piece of elastic around your waist and cut it where it overlaps. The elastic will be inside the waistband.
Step 17: Using a zigzag stitch, sew the ends of the elastic together.
Overlap the ends of the elastic by about 4 inches.Using a zigzag stitch, sew across the ends 3 to 4 times. The thread will be on the inside.
Step 18: Use a zigzag stitch to sew the elastic to the waistband.
Put the elastic over the shorts.Attach it to all of the front, back, and side seams with sewing pins.Make sure the top edges are aligned, then sew the elastic to the shorts using a zigzag stitch.Pull the elastic as you sew to fit the waistband. When you're done, take the pins out.
Step 19: If you want to sew along the bottom edge, fold the waistband down.
The elastic is hidden if you fold the waistband down.Using a zigzag stitch, sew along the bottom edge of the folded waistband. When sewing, backstitch when you finish and match the color of your fabric. When you are done, remove the excess thread. The shorts should be turned right-side-out when you are done. They are ready to wear.It would be a good idea to trim off any loose or hanging threads quickly.
