The right side of the heart pumps blood to the lungs and the left side pumps it into the bloodstream. It's easy to make a heart model if you want to.You'll have fun and learn at the same time if you use a Styrofoam cup or pop bottle model.
Step 1: Red playdough can be used to create a heart.
Start by rolling a red ball that is about 1 to 1.5 inches wide and thick. If you want to make a small indent, lay a finger down the middle and press down.As if it were an apple, press down firmly on the top to create a more prominent indent.Press firmly against the bottom-right of the apple shape to create a small, less prominent indent. The left side of the top is slightly taller than the right side. The right side is actually the left side.Imagine the heart inside your body if you get confused.
Step 2: Attach a tube of red playdough to the right ventricle.
To act as the aorta, roll a piece of red playdough that is about 2 inches long.Attach it to the left bulge.A curve in the tube is created when the heart runs down over the right bulge and tails off to the left.To represent the center tubing of the aorta, you can use a playdough knife to make a small incision into the end of a cylindrical piece.
Step 3: A 2 inch tube is connected to the bottom of the heart.
The aorta extends from the top of the heart. The bottom of the aorta is where the tube piece should be.Make sure the small tube runs directly across from the top tube, as if both of them make one single piece running through the heart.
Step 4: Attach the tubes to the aorta.
The arteries that extend from the aorta are represented by 3 small tubes. They should be connected to the top piece of the aorta. The tip of a playdough knife or toothpick can be used to create small holes in the tubes. These are the arteries' inner tubing.
Step 5: There is a tube of blue playdough.
The tube of blue playdough is about 1.5 inches long.Your heart's left vein is where this is.You should connect one end to the base of the aorta. The portion of the aorta that extends to the right is run over.Attach the blue tube individually if it's easier.Start by running one from the bottom of the aorta up to the heart's center, and the other from this point right over the remaining section.
Step 6: Attach the tube of blue playdough to the left of the heart.
There is a vein in the heart.Start by rolling a tube of blue playdough.Attach it to the back left of the heart so that only the top and bottom are visible.Wrap the top of the tube around the heart.Use a playdough knife or toothpick to create a small hole in the top of the tube. This is the center tubing of the vein.
Step 7: The blue veins have arteries at the top of them.
Roll 2 small tubes of blue playdough.Attach them to the top from their tips. You can create a small hole with your knife.
Step 8: A Styrofoam cup is filled with water.
The cup acts like the heart and the water as the blood. The size of the cup doesn't matter if it can hold at least one cup of water.Go for it if you have something larger. You can use a beaker instead of a cup.Red food coloring can be added for a nice effect.
Step 9: The balloon's neck should be cut with scissors.
Purchase large balloons that are at least 12 inches in diameter.Cut the neck at the region where it starts to widen.Set the neck aside.Children under 8 years of age should not be near broken or uninflated balloons.
Step 10: The balloon needs to be stretched over the cup's opening.
Pull it over the cup tightly. The balloon should be as flat as possible when you're done.Breakable balloons should be discarded as soon as possible.
Step 11: Attach a wooden skewer to the balloon's surface.
To create the holes, gently press down on the surface of the balloon with the skewer.Try to make them the same size as your straws. You need to create each hole on the opposite side of the balloon.Big-box stores and home hardware stores sell wooden skewers.
Step 12: The straws need to be inserted into the holes.
To avoid ripping the balloon, gently insert each one.The straws need to fit into the holes so that no air escapes. If the holes are too big, remove the balloon and repeat the last 3 steps.
Step 13: Wrap the balloon neck with a straw.
To keep air out, cover the tip of the straws with the neck.To hold it in place, tape it to the straw. The best results come from using Scotch tape.
Step 14: Press on the balloon to pump the heart into the sink.
If you aim the open straw into the sink, it will act as the body. The center of the balloon acts as the heart if you press one of your fingers down. The water from the cup is pumped through the straws and into the sink when you press down. The cut part of the balloon stops the blood from entering the previous chamber.
Step 15: Press down on the balloon after removing it from the straw.
The blood moves down the straw after the heart is pumped without a valve. The blood can't move through the heart and into the body. The balloon neck is the heart's valve. This example shows how your heart works. There are four chambers and four valves in your body.
Step 16: There are 2 holes to be drilled into a bottle cap with a drill bit.
A 32 inch drill bit is roughly the size of a standard straws diameter.Attach the drill bit to the electric drill and make 2 holes in one of the caps.Place the cap on a flat surface with the top facing upward.Put the drill into the center of the cap and apply downward pressure.Your straws should be able to slide through each hole.Don't use an electric drill without the assistance of an adult.
Step 17: The drill bit is 16 inch (0.95) cm.
The second cap should have a smaller hole than the first two.Attach your bit and drill into the cap.Place the bottle caps on the flat surface.
Step 18: Water and food coloring can be added to your pitcher to make blood.
Food coloring can be added to a pitcher of water. If you have something that looks bloody, you don't need to worry about using an exact amount of food coloring. The food coloring should be poured into the pitcher.
Step 19: To make two 90 degree angles, connect 2 straws and bend them.
To make it smaller, pinch the end of the tip and put it into the other straw. The bendable portion of the straws should be adjusted so they are 90 degrees. At the point where they connect, tape the straws together. The straws should be kept parallel and facing downward. With the remaining 2 straws, repeat the above process.
Step 20: About 80 percent of your pop bottles are filled with water.
Carefully pour your red water into your bottles.Don't worry about filling them all, just leave 1/3 of them empty. If you haven't already, remove the labels from the bottles.
Step 21: Place your bottles in front of you.
In front of you, place your bottles with blood in a horizontal line.Put the empty bottle to the right of them. The bottles should be placed on a flat surface.
Step 22: Attach the straws to the bottles with water.
Start by sliding the long end of a straw through the bottle.Go through the cap with the other long end.Attach the second cap with 2 holes to the middle bottle and the left bottle with 1 hole. The caps should be fastened after. The third bottle should be empty.Take care not to bend the caps as you slide the straws into the bottles.
Step 23: Attach straws to the bottles.
The middle bottle's cap has a hole on it.The empty bottle has no cap.Use clay to seal the open space between the straws and the holes.
Step 24: Place masking tape on each bottle.
Attach a piece of tape to each bottle and put a permanent marker on it.The left bottle should be the heart, the second the ventricle, and the third the lungs.Your fingers are the heart's valves. It helps to better understand the function of each part of the model if you skip this step.
Step 25: You can squeeze the middle bottle.
The middle bottle has a straw connecting it to the left bottle.Look at the blood flow into the body when you squeeze the ventricle.Take the left straw and pinch the right straw to keep the ventricle squeezed. The blood moves from the heart to the ventricle. If you repeat this process you will be able to distribute the blood from the heart into the body.If the blood in the heart is low, take some from the body and give it to it.You can begin the process over now.
