It can be difficult to keep your rabbit messes off the floor.Rabbits need a special type of litterbox setup.Your rabbit will use the litterbox if it is comfortable.A litterbox with a grid over the litter is helpful since rabbits love to dig. This will allow your bunny to keep its litter inside its box.
Step 1: Purchase a bowl set.
A cheap plastic strainer set can be used as a litter box for a rabbit.A cheap plastic bowl and colander can be found online or in a department store. The bottom part of the bowl has holes in it.The bowl you choose for your rabbit's litterbox should be small.Make sure the sides are low enough for your rabbit to get into the bowl.
Step 2: The bowl should be covered with a plastic bag.
Cleanup will be easier with a plastic bag liner. If you don't want to use a plastic bag, you can wash the bowl once per week. When you empty the bowl each day, you will need to dump out the entire contents. If you want to line the bowl, keep a supply of plastic bags on hand.
Step 3: Line the bowl with newspaper pellet litter.
The safest litter for rabbits is this one.If you cannot find newspaper litter pellets, you can use wood stove pellets that do not contain any explosives. In a rabbit's litterbox, never use clay, cedar, or pine litter.Dust and fumes from litter can be hazardous to a bunny.
Step 4: Put the bowl in your bunny's enclosure.
Put the litter set in the bunny's enclosure after you have finished lining the bottom of the bowl.It should be in the corner where your bunny does its business. If your rabbit will be roaming outside its box for a while, you should set the bowl and colander outside of the enclosure.
Step 5: Your base is a large plastic cat litterbox.
If you want to get a large litterbox for your bunny, visit your local pet supply store. If you have more than one bunny that weighs over 10 lbs, you should get a giant litterbox.
Step 6: A wire grid or plastic crate will fit in the litterbox.
You can purchase a plastic grate meant for use with a litterbox, cut a piece of plastic crate to fit the box, or buy a wire grid for your litter box.A mushroom crate or fluorescent light cover can be used to make a rabbit litterbox. If you want to make a plastic grid, ask for a used mushroom box in the produce department of your local grocery store.Purchase a fluorescent light fixture cover at a hardware store if you want to make a wire grid.If you want to buy other types of grids, make sure the wire or plastic is not too wide and has a smooth surface. If a bunny gets caught on a jagged wire or gets a foot stuck in 1 of the openings, they can hurt their feet.
Step 7: The box will fit easily if the crate is cut.
Use a sharp pair of scissors to cut the plastic grate. The plastic or wire grid needs to be cut to fit into the litterbox with less than 1 cm of space between the edges. To cut a wire grid, make sure to wear safety goggles. If you want to avoid making sharp edges in the grid, cut through 1 piece of wire at a time and keep the cuts straight.
Step 8: Line the box with newspaper cat litter.
The safest option for your bunny is litter made from recycled newspaper. The litterbox should be filled with just enough litter to cover the bottom. It's a good idea to avoid clay, pine, and cedar litters.Dust and fumes can be hazardous to your bunny.
Step 9: If you want to cover the litter with hay, place the plastic grid over it.
Place the custom-made grid over the litter after you have filled the box with litter.Place a layer of hay over the grid. This will make your rabbit want to go in the litterbox. If possible, give your rabbit Timothy hay.
Step 10: The litterbox should be in your rabbit's enclosure.
Place the litterbox in the rabbit's enclosure when it is complete. The rabbit likes to urinate and defecate in the corner of the enclosure. When your rabbit is playing outside of its cage, make sure to remove the box from the enclosure.
