There is nothing quite like flying a kite outdoors on a sunny day. What else is even better? You made your own kite. You can make a simple diamond kite in one afternoon. We will show you how to build the frame, fashion the sail, and put it all together. You can watch your custom kite soar across the sky.
Step 1: You can make a T-shape with your sticks.
The frame for your kite is made up of two sticks, the 20 in (51 cm) and the 24 in (61 cm).If you want to make a bigger kite, use longer sticks.Make sure the horizontal stick is at least 4 inches shorter than the vertical stick.
Step 2: Attach the sticks with string and glue.
The twine should be wrapped around the two pieces in the middle. Then, tie the string or twine with a small knot and trim off the excess string with scissors.Super glue can be put between the 2 pieces to make them more secure. When the sticks are attached, make sure they form a right angle. The horizontal stick should be in line with the vertical stick.
Step 3: The horizontal notch at the end of each stick should be 1 to 2 in.
To make a notch at the end of a stick, use scissors. They should run across the width of the stick. They should be deep enough to fit the string you will use to attach the sail. You can poke holes into the ends of the sticks if you use very thin sticks and string.
Step 4: The frame has a string around it.
Wrap the string around the frame with a knot.Pull the string through the notch on the right end of the frame. The string should be stretched through the notch at the bottom of the frame.Wrap the string around the top end of the frame.Scissors can be used to remove excess string. If the string is taut but not tight, the sticks won't bend or warp.As your kite flies through the air, the string will help the frame retain its shape.
Step 5: A 40 inch (100 cm) wide plastic bag, paper, or fabric can be used for the sail.
You can think outside the box here.It will be easy to decorate a large white garbage bag.White contact paper or newspaper can be used. It's important that the fabric is thick and sturdy so the sail is strong.
Step 6: The frame needs to be on the sail.
Spread the material on the ground. The frame should be in the center of the sail.
Step 7: The frame should be outlined with a ruler.
Place the ruler on top of the frame and then down the stick on the right side of it.Use a pen or pencil to draw a diagonal line from the top of the stick to the right, using the ruler as a guide. From the right end to the bottom end of the frame, as well as the left end, do this again.Draw a diagonal line from the left to the top of the frame. The frame should be in the middle of the diamond on the sail.
Step 8: The diamond should be cut 2 inches wider than the outline.
Use scissors to cut out the diamond so that you can wrap the sail around the frame. You should have a diamond sail that can fit over the frame.
Step 9: Attach the frame with glue and tape down the edge of the sail.
Press the edge of the sail on the frame to keep it in place.masking tape or electrical tape can be used to secure the sail to the frame. You don't want the sail to come loose in the air, so check that it sits tightly over the frame.
Step 10: Attach the line.
The string should be at least 20 inches (51 cm) long. There is a small hole above where the 2 sticks meet with scissors. The hole should be large enough to hold the flying line.Pull one end of the flying line through the hole and tie it tightly around the cross point. While you finish the rest of the kite, let the flying line hang down. You can make the flying line longer by adding string to it.Adding more string to the flying line can help the kite fly straighter.
Step 11: A piece of thick string is needed to make a kite tail.
Attach the tail to the bottom end of the frame and tie it tightly.Use thick string or cloth for the tail.If you want your kite to look good in the air, choose a string or cloth that matches the color of your sail.
Step 12: Attach the cloth or ribbon to the tail at 1 foot intervals.
There are pieces that are 2 to 3 inches long.Attach them to the tail with a small knot. The kite will fly straight if the tail stays balanced.
Step 13: The kite should be decorated with markers or colored paper.
The fun part is here.Write words or phrases on your kite with markers.A fun pattern like stripes or dots can be created with markers.Use colored paper to glue shapes onto the sail.If you write your name on the kite, you can see it flying.
Step 14: You can kite in a spot without trees or power lines.
Kite flying can be done in an area close to a body of water with good winds.Run in the direction of the wind if you hold onto the kite string. As you run, release the kite and push it into the wind.Keep the kite in the air with the flying line.
