How to make a hat for Robin Hood or Peter Pan?
A bin of closeout fabric started calling my name during a visit to Hobby Lobby.Does that happen to anyone else?Despite not having a project in mind, I purchased some of the bolts that were contained in the bin.The felt sat in the studio for a couple of weeks before inspiration came from a traditional green, Robin Hood costume hat.
I wanted to make my own version of the merry men and women that I bought from the collection of colors. The result is a simple bycocket hat that can be machine or hand-stitched.
The optional feather can be placed on either side of the hat.Remove the feather from the hat and place it in the brim.
I made a smaller version of the first one because I had to wear a ponytail under the hat.You can get the felt Robin Hood Hat pattern in the Making Make Believe shop.
I plan to make an entire costume out of the hat.I hope you enjoy this project, and if you craft one, be sure to post a pic and tag Making Make Believe.I would love to see what you come up with.
1.Place your pattern piece on the fold when you fold your fabric in half.Use a marking pen or chalk to trace the pattern onto the felt.
2.Go along your cutting line.Transfer the blue dot and black slash marks on the pattern to your hat piece using a marking pencil or chalk.
3.You can see the pink dash marks on your pattern by Stitching a 1/4′′ seam allowance along the short, curved edge.
4.Press the seam when turning hat right side out.The hat should be formed by folding the edge at the dots.
It's a good idea to read the bolt label before buying craft felts that can melt with heat.Use a pressing cloth to protect your project or test iron settings on a scrap piece of felt.
