Fry bread is a popular creation in the American southwest. The base for the famous Navajo taco can be found at pow wows, diners and truck stops. The dough is handled gently and allowed to rest before being fried in hot lard and finished with sweet or savory topping.Instructions on how to make fresh fry bread at home can be found in Step 1 and beyond.
Step 1: The wet ingredients should be mixed with the dry ingredients.
In a large bowl, put the flour, baking powder, powdered milk, and salt.To thoroughly incorporate them, use a whisk. The well should be in the center of the mixture.
Step 2: The water should be warm.
Warm water should be poured into the well.
Step 3: The dough should be mixed.
You can use a wooden spoon to make the dough. If you want, you can use your hands instead of a spoon.Over mixing the dough will cause the fry bread to turn out tough.
Step 4: The dough should be allowed to relax.
Put it into a ball and place it in a bowl.Put a clean dish towel over the top of the bowl so the dough can rest in a dry place. It's not necessary for the dough to sit for more than 10 minutes. It should be fried fresh within an hour or two.If you let the bread sit overnight, it won't taste as good.
Step 5: The dough needs to be broken into pieces.
Pull the dough apart and shape it into balls.Fry bread rounds about the size of tortillas can be made using the heel of your hand. The dough should be handled at this stage. You should only handle it to create the shapes you need.If you want to cut individual pieces of dough, you can flatten the entire dough ball and use a cutter or knife.Place a dishcloth over the dough pieces as you work to prevent them from getting dried out.
Step 6: Put the fat in a pan.
A large amount of vegetable oil or shortening can be put into a skillet or frying pan.To raise the side of the pan by 1 inch, you need enough fat.The fat should be melted over high heat. The fat should be heated to 350 F.
Step 7: The fat should be tested.
If it's hot enough, put a small piece of dough in the pan.The bread should start to cook. Before you cook the bread, make sure it's hot.
Step 8: The dough should be put in the pan.
The dough won't cook evenly if there are too many of them.
Step 9: The sides should be cooked for 2 to 4 minutes.
When the first side is golden brown, use tongs to cook the other side.
Step 10: Transfer the bread to a plate.
As you finish cooking the bread, the towels will absorb the extra oil.
Step 11: Immediately serve it.
Fry bread is very good when it's still hot.You can either eat the fry bread straight from the pan or top it with one of the following ingredients.
Step 12: Make tortillas with the Navajo people.
If you want a traditional, filling treat, use your fry bread. The taco ingredients include ground beef cooked with taco seasoning, chopped tomatoes, lettuce, onions, Pinto beans, and green chile salsa.
