How to Fix Hardwood Floor Problems: Cupping, Crowning, Chatter Marks or Waves?
A wood floor company did the re-do.The first place was an office. We had them go through the hall, kitchen and foyer. There were lap marks all over the place when they were done.Someone said they were called chatter marks.Window.adsbygoogle is a window.
The company came back and looked at the problem and he said that the job was rated at an A minus. We can't comprehend this. The man made the statement that his machine might have gone out of adjustment as the worker looked at the job.The other guy tried to ignore it.The actual owner came out to look at the job and downplayed it.Much of the problem won't be seen if we put throw rugs and furniture back in.
The office didn't have this problem. There were a few places, but nothing more. The waves polluted the second phase. The owner said that the marks were the result of the machine and a hundred other factors.
Chatter and the wave can be caused by a number of factors.Waves are separated by several inches while Chatter marks are very close together.Waves can be caused by something as simple as debris on one of the wheels on the big sander causing a thump as the wheel turns.Chatter can be caused by a loose sub floor. The only way to get rid of it is to sand the floor again. To remove the chatter or wave, the floor needs to be sanded on a bit of an angle. The marks would get worse if the floor was sanded again in the same direction.Something changed between the initial area and the later area.It needs to be determined if it is the floor or equipment.
Thank you for getting back to me on this.Is there a way to tell if it is the floor or the machine?
That is a difficult one to answer and will depend on the honesty of the person who owns the machine. There are a lot of things that can mess up a machine.More often than not it will be the machine that is neglected.Issues do not announce themselves before they arrive.I have had issues with the drum being in a U shape and the grooves being cut into the floor. It did not happen on previous jobs.We need to give each floor a good look in order to find tool marks. There are a lot of issues that can appear at any time.It is because I know what can happen that each stain job still stresses me out after 39 years.
There are a number of things that can affect the sanding.
If I can, I'll ask a few more questions. Is this a problem that people have to deal with in the flooring industry? Is the floor re-do responsibility of the contractors?Do the home owner have to pay twice for the job?
Every floor guy knows about the wave and has had it happen to them at least once.Unless there is clear evidence of neglect, I try to avoid the blame game.I am not sure if a home owner or a floor contractor would want that issue to appear on the job.Chatter can be either a machine issue or a floor issue. The floor is loose. The floor contractors are not fault if he sees it in time and can work it out.A machine issue would fall on the contractor to fix.I only have waves once.I couldn't have that on my job.I spent $7300 on a new sanding machine. The home owner did not complain about it.Chatter marks twice on the same floor, I work for a well known floor company.I was given 1000 sq ft of sand, stain and finish.I screened the floor with 120 before cutting it.The floor company I hired had three times to get the job right and yet they couldn't deliver as they promised! They applied the wrong finish.Large patches of white filmy wood were visible after they re-buffed and put on gloss. There are places where the stain was lightly sanded out and then stained to match the surrounding wood. The marks from the sanding are still visible. The spots were sanded across the grain. We recently had engineered wood floors installed and one of our wood-painted chairs has scuffed the floor with the paint from the chair, do you know of a product we can use to remove this?I just had an end table top refinished by a local guy who has been in business for 25 years. The lamp shows off the finish very clearly.I can see circular motion from his buffer under this light. The paint came off the bottom of the chairs as she moved them around in her room. How do I get rid of the paint marks?Window.adsbygoogle is a window.
