The face paint is an essential part of a costume. The main features you will need to paint are the red eyebrows, red nose, and large red smile, if you are going for a take on the character. There are blue diamonds on top of each eye, unlike other takes on the character. If you are going for the full outfit, get a red suit jacket, orange vest, and green undershirt. You can match your hair with the original character by dyeing it green.
Step 1: You should keep a photo of the clown next to you.
It may be difficult to duplicate the famous character's makeup.Use your phone or laptop to take a high-quality photo of Phoenix's character and leave it next to the mirror where you work. This will be helpful when it comes to making minor adjustments.
Step 2: White, red, and blue face paints are activated by water.
You can get a set of water-activated face paints. You don't need a lot of face paint, so a few containers should be more than enough. You can mist or sprinkle water on the surface of the paint to make it work. You can mix the damp surface of the paint with a brush or sponge. The ready-to-use face paints are low quality. If you are going for an authentic look, you should use water-activated paints. You can purchase face paints from an art supply store. Most costume shops have them.Depending on the brand you choose, they cost $5-15.
Step 3: Use a small paint sponge to cover your face.
A 2–3 in paint or makeup sponge is needed. You can put it in your face paint. You can cover your face with a layer of white by rubbing the sponge on it.If you want to stay inside of your chin and cheekbones, you need to work around 1 in.To apply paint to your eyelid, close your eyes.If you watch closely, you will see that Phoenix's makeup in the film isn't perfect. It is blotchy and poorly applied.Don't worry about covering your face with paint.Thin it out in the next step.Whenever the color starts to thin out, reload your sponge with more paint.
Step 4: Use a wet sponge to make a mess of the face.
When you add a layer of white, dip your sponge in a small cup of water. The excess water should be squeezed out.To thin the paint out, gently rub the wet sponge under your eyes, eyebrows, and jaw.Continue blotting the paint until you like it, there are no hard rules here.If you are going out on a hot night in your costume, keep the paint a little darker. The paint will thin out on its own if you sweat over the course of the night.
Step 5: As you work, wipe any mistakes off with a damp cloth.
If you get paint on your neck or hair, wipe it away with a wet cloth. As you apply the paint, keep this cloth near you to clean up any mistakes you make.
Step 6: Attach your eyebrows with a 1 in brush and red paint.
Halfway between your natural eyebrows and your hair. You should leave at least 1.5 in of space above the eyes for the blue diamonds.Use your brush to add a curved length of red paint that is roughly the same size as your actual eyebrow above your left eye and place a slightly asymmetrical length on the right. If you want to build on the center of each eyebrow, brush the paint up a little. When you thin the paint, dip your brush in the water.Add a few vertical marks along the bottom of each brow to give it a little detail.Making the eyebrows asymmetrical will make you look unstable.
Step 7: You can use the same red paint to paint the tip of the nose.
You can paint the bottom of your nose with a brush. The middle of the nose should be filled with a layer of red paint. To make your nose look like a clown's nose, add some paint to it.To make the nose darker, fill it with an additional layer of paint. The tip of the nose is darker than the rest.
Step 8: Use a wet brush to make the eyebrows and nose look bigger.
The eyebrows and nose should be put in a cup of water. Then, let the brush dry out for a while. The brush can be used to feather out the eyebrows and nose. This makes the paint look messy and sloppy, which is what the makeup looks like in the film.
Step 9: A messy smile can be created by painting over and around your lips.
Get a fresh coat of red face paint.Run the brush over your lips.Add an additional layer of paint to your lips.At the edges, extend the 2 layers upward at a 15-degree angle and connect them in a soft point.
Step 10: To make it look worn down, feather the red around your lips.
Run your brush around the exterior edges of the red paint and spread it out a little. This makes the paint look a little distressed. It's up to you if you want the paint to look worn down. The amount of feathering you do with the wet brush can be toned down if you want it to be relatively clean.
Step 11: A blue outline of a diamond surrounds your eyes.
You can dip the brush in the paint. You can draw the outline of a 3 by 3 in diamond over your eyes.Put your eye in the middle of the diamond.
Step 12: Blue paint is used to finish the look of the diamonds.
When you get to your eyes, fill in the interior of the diamond with blue paint. After closing your eyes, gently apply the paint on your eyelid and under your eye.
Step 13: Load your brush with water and apply it to the diamonds.
You can give the bottom of the diamonds a little personality by dipping your brush in some water.Put your head back 15 to 25 degrees and apply water and paint to the diamonds. The dripping paint makes your makeup look messy.
Step 14: To add highlights, apply white to the cheeks and forehead.
The sponge should be put into a little bit of white. The sponge should be put in the middle of your cheeks.Rub a bit of white on the top of your head. There is a contrast between the red features and the base layer of white. It is a good idea to give your face paint 10 minutes to settle before touching it.The face paint can be washed off in the shower.
