It's possible to add style to an old pair of jeans or show off your favorite shoes with the right cuff. The best part about a cuff? It's free. You can change your look with different cuff styles. If you love it enough, you can just sew it into place.
Step 1: There are pictures of different styles of cuff.
There are many different forms of cuffs. If you notice other people cuffing their jeans, do research in fashion magazines or online.
Step 2: You can find a cuff that works for you.
Factors to consider include the width and weight of your jeans, the type of footwear you expect to pair with them, and whether or not you want a cuff that adds length to your silhouette.Single Roll: The jeans are rolled up once about 1 inch ( 2.5 cm), with the option of attaching the hem under the rolled part.It works with a variety of jeans and suits all body types. It may look like a slipper under this non-tapered cuff, so avoid narrow footwear. The single roll is up to 2 inches (5 cm) long. This is for denim that you want to show off.Since this long cuff has a shortening effect, more stocky frames should beware.A more casual variation involves bunching the cuff.A skinny roll is a mini cuff made from three small, tight flips to the hem. This look is best for slim silhouettes and lighter-weight denim. The shoes shine with this look, but don't wear large shoes. The first cuff is 1 inch and the second is 2 inches.Lighter jeans will give this cuff more structure. It is possible to wear mid-weight to large shoes. The thickness of this cuff can be shortening.Instead of folding the cuff up, this one is tucked under. The look is very clean and concealed. To maintain this tuck, your denim needs to be very heavy.Depending on the jean width and how far you tuck under, it can work with a variety of footwear. It can be long.
Step 3: Try on the jeans and make a cuff.
If you can, stand in front of the mirror. You can get a better sense of how the cuff works by wearing your favorite shoes and top.You can use a tape measure or ruler to help you make the initial cuff, and then adjust according to your taste.
Step 4: The measurement of the cuff's folds should be noted.
Write down the length of each fold in the cuff using a tape measure or ruler. You'll need in the next section.
Step 5: The jeans need to be washed.
Cold water can be used on the gentle cycle. If there is a care instructions on the jeans' inside label, follow it.It might be a good idea to wash the jeans inside out.The jeans should be removed from the washing machine as soon as the cycle ends to prevent wrinkling of the fabric.
Step 6: While they are wet, lay the jeans on a flat surface.
Use your hands as much as possible to smooth out the material. If you're worried about getting the flat surface wet, you can lay out a thick bath towel.
Step 7: The cuff should be created.
The bottom edge of the jeans should be manipulated until they are folded over into a cuff.Make sure there are no surprises.Keeping the cuffs the same length, repeat the process with the other jean leg.
Step 8: Allow the jeans to dry.
They should be kept on a flat surface during the drying process.Hanging them on a clothesline or over a shower rack can cause cuffs to unfold. If you have a sweater dryer, you can drape the waist off the end if the jeans are too long.To allow both sides to dry evenly, flip the jeans over.
Step 9: It's a good idea to iron the jeans.
When your jeans are dry, get out your ironing board and heat up your iron.Again, consult the care label on the jeans. It could suggest a medium or high setting. The hot iron should be used on both sides to make sure all thewrinkles have been removed.Unless you want them bunched, press the cuffs.
Step 10: Try on the jeans.
Take a few different outfits and shoes and see how you like it.You're ready to sew if you think you've found a cuff you want to keep.If you've worn the jeans several times, it might be necessary to repeat Part 2, Steps 1-6 before sewing.
Step 11: Pick up your thread and needle after you remove your jeans.
The thread should be similar to the jeans. It is advisable to use a leather needle if you want to penetrate layers of thick denim.A medium-thick needle may suffice if your jeans are lightweight.
Step 12: Place the jean cuff in place.
The horizontal and vertical hems of the pants meet at two points on the leg.Start the needle from the inside of the leg and make sure the cuff is securely in place. The needle should not go all the way to the outside of the cuff. The first layer of hem is the most important part.
Step 13: Place a knot on the inside of the cuff on each side.
The process can be repeated on the other leg. You're done!
